.... for a new one, on a fixed term contract......

I've got an interview for a medium-major career change (moving into the regulatory side of my work - pharmacy) BUT the regulatory body is changing to one run by the government next year. So they're only offering fixed term contracts that run until the end of next year. However, these jobs don't come up very often and even less often in the right geographical location for me (last time was a few years back, and it was filled by an internal transfer). And there's a fair chance (but not at all certain) the new government body will simply employ the current people so no loss of job for me.

But I do have a nice job (as permanent as they get these days) now with people I get along well with, and a mortgage etc

If it wasn't fixed term I'd be jumping.... as it is, I'm looking for comments from the PH advice bank smile So, what'd'll think?

You know your industry better than anyone.
My gut instinct would be to stay put.

Quite possibly all the jobs you describe would be subject to TUPE transfer anyway.

Exactly what I have just done.

Left my permy job for a 12month FTC, but with a possible/probable extension to that contract - I know my industry and Id edge towards probable for me. The big advantage though is the 5 figure jump in salary for me.

Yes, there is a risk, but I equally view there is/was risk where I currently work, hell, they have just done a redundancy round and I wouldnt bet the mortgages that there wouldnt be another one in 12months time.

Personally Im working on a 12months at a time perspective at the moment. I think thats the most realistic context at the moment.

Had a good chat to the other half last night; she knows this has been in my head for a long time and reckons I might as well go for it (not that they've offered me the job yet biggrin ). I should be able to find a new job, or go self employed again, without too much hassle if this does die on me after a year (even if it's not as peachy as my current one).

Scabbed a day off for the interview using a total lie wink
