http://www.cnn.com/2009/HEALTH/11/05/h1n1.flu.who....

Apparently according to the WHO, H1N1 (swine flu) is the worlds dominant flu virus... Huh? How do they figure that out? According to the CDC ( http://www.cdc.gov/flu/about/disease/us_flu-relate... ) the average number of regular flu deaths per year in the US alone is 36,000. How the hell can something with 5000+ deaths globally, can be more dominant than one with over 250,000 deaths annually?
http://www.who.int/mediacentre/factsheets/fs211/en...

Anyone know how they work it out???

I'll take a guess at it.

Not everyone dies from flu. Thus far in 2009 H1N1 influenza has given more people flu like symptoms than any other flu virus and unlike seasonal influenza it has gone pandemic. It's also managed to take hold in what are possibly the least ideal conditions for Influenza-A i.e. warmer, drier months, so with winter around the corner the chances of it spreading faster are much higher - especially as most people have no native immunity to it from previous exposure.

Spanish flu killed some 50,000,000 and infected an estimated 33% of the worlds population, and that's not the dominant flu virus either smile

But the numbers are still tiny compared to seasonal flu.

In total, or so far this year? I've not looked at the numbers so forgive my ignorance, but I'd have thought that pig flu has been more dominant this far into 2009?

When your having people phoning up for a diagnosis.

Ill Person - Oooo i'm feeling a little queezzzzzzy and sniff a bit

Guberment nonuffink - That'll be Pig Flu.......tick the board Gomez

Ill Person - Thanks, Two weeks off for me

Guberment nonuffink - My pleasure

The fact that certain people in high places have a vested interested in the sale of the vaccine. The fact that the vaccine was patented even before Pig Flu was released known about.

Are you surprised ?

Doctors here (Germany) are recommending NOT to get the swine flu vaccination as the side-effects can be deadly (more so than the virus itself) apart from which the vaccine is totally untested!!!
And the 3 manufacturers of the vaccine are minting it as they did with that "oh so dangerous" bird flu......
Next year it'll be nigerian chimpanzee flu..or cornish lobster flu...
They're avin a larf!!!
Don't forget there are around 40000 deaths per annum for "normal" flu in Europe anyway!!!

I was chatting with my dad about this last night.

His friend who works with the NHS was offered the vaccine and turned it down. He said that the majority of his colleagues had also turned it down.

Many vaccines spend YEARS in medical and clinical trials to make sure there will be no dangerous side effects yet we've managed to rush this out just months following the very first case?!

I wouldn't trust it either, i'd rather take my chances with swine flu.

confusedBut there's a new flu vaccine every year, so how is this different?

FWIW both SWMBO and I had it yesterday. SWMBO had it as she's a GP (so will be exposed to it) and in a high risk group (what with being pregnant). I had it because I was offered a spare dose at the practice I was in and I couldn't think of a good reason not to.

Total global numbers killed for swine flu is just over 5000 I believe... Seasonal flu kills around 250,000 a year.

Is it not that the 250,000 globally is for an entire year where most of the deaths occur during the winter phase? Swine flu has so far only done the summer phase so by the time it has had a winter to work through it could well have exceeded the seasonal flu numbers. Does anybody know haw many people die of seasonal flu in the summer?

The southern hemisphere has just had it's winter phase and Oz seems to mirror our experience of flu. I'm not sure of other figures but apparently 10% of ITU admissions have been pregnant women with pig panic.

My sister lives in Australia, she was saying it hasn't been that bad over there (or may be less publicity) she is 7 months pregnant and was advised there was no need for her to have the vacc by her doctor so she hasn't.

I am 5 months pregnant and I am really not keen on the idea, I am not prone to asthma. My hubby has just had a really bad cold I caught it and no where near as badly as him, I am taking daily vit min supplements, eating well staying active (working full time as a vet nurse keeps me on my toes!) I just don't see myself as a high risk patient, neither have I been asked to go for the vacc.

The Ukraine is weak.
Lots of people here in Canada have also turned it down. Not really sure what to do?
