This is actually a very, very good point!

Where are red wedge, and all the 'right on' Ben Elton/Alexei Sayle comedian types now?

More material for them now than there ever was.

Er, they didn't have jobs, so they formed a band and went out gigging.
Looks like it's your turn now.

Uh, they are all sitting in their mansions with their bentley on the driveway. I am sure they can ask the staff to write you a song though......

Yeah, bloody Thatcher.

Mainly (and dare I say this) I dont think a lot of the kids today are as politely switched on and therefore perhaps it would not work as well - Although ask them who is in X-Factor..

Added: Actually, would The Young Ones format work today?

Only protesting today is to campaign the Government to go MORE green.

Their ilk are on genorous benefits. They wont complain when you have a left leaning socialist/proletarian Goobermint in control that feeds parasites whatever the unemployment rate. Unemployment isn't as bad when it effects a wide cross section of classes only when it effects Blue collar/working class/lower classrolleyes

Interesting question

I think the answer is this.

In the 80s the song writers were protesting about a right wing goverment. Many in the entertainment industry were fashionably left of centre as they are today. Knocking Mrs T was deriguer.

Today we have a left wing government. The fashionably left of centre songwriters don't have a big Bogey Man to poke with a metaphorical stick. They don't have the guts to stick their head above the parapet and berate the useless bags of bones currently in power, because they would be having a pop at their fashionably left brethren. I bet if they did it would be the great big nasty bankers who they would sing about, because that would be fashionably left wing.

Too obvious?

Oh I dunno, the Horst Wessel Lied is a damn good tune. Slightly suspect provenance though smile

I did actually know the answer, it was hearing UB40 on the radio that did it.
