Hi guys and gals
its time after many moons to finally ask the other half if she would do me the honour.
As this is my first and hopefully only time in asking i am not sure where to get a descent ring from.
I would appreciate any advice on which are the best places to go.
I have an idea on the design, i am thinking diamond with her birthstone in yellow gold.
Is it better to buy a ready made one or buy the diamond and stones seperate?

IIRC, there are some experts on here that are PHers and hopefully they will chime in.
From my limited understanding of diamonds (cuts glass, suggests marriage and has replaced the dog as a girl's best friend) they are better off in a platinum setting with a gold band. Something about showing off the sparkle better.

Avoid Tiffany like the plague unless you want your wallet raped for a grossly inferior product. Their ring settings all look as though they've been stamped out of tin. Their much vaunted 'quality' of stones isn't 'all that', either.
Personally I'd go for D Flawless on the basis that it is the purest diamond yet discovered that you can give. Quality rather than size. I have a pair of D Flawless diamond earrings at 0.15 carat each, and they knock far bigger stones into a cocked hat. £900 at the time, if I recall. Just one of those would do nicely in a ring.
No doubt there will be the usual willy wavers along to say how wrong I am, however all other diamonds look dull and yellow by comparison. Trust me on this one.
