New Year's Day Event at Brooklands Museum
Discussion
Just a heads-up. The Museum will be open again on New Year’s day in 2010 for the largest New Year’s classic car gathering in the South East so if you’re not nursing too sore a head from the night before then come on down.
All pre 1973 cars welcome through the Campbell Gate as are organised clubs.
Expect anything from veteran cars to Hot Rods, that’s the joy of this event - you just don’t know what is going to turn up !
This year was just brilliant, the paddock and overspill car parking was full, great stuff!

We have done this for the last 2 years.
Just after Christmas it is a very welcome diversion, you need warm clothing you will see some great cars, fun event, the museum is always well worth a visit, there is a shop and a good cafe.
It is a great place, their PR is so poor no one knows just how much good stuff goes on there every week.Recommended.

Lotus72, thank you very much for reminding us of this excellent event. I went this year and it was fascinating (although I nearly died of the cold). I've found some of the photos and put some on my Blog, if anybody would like to see them: http://lindsaydobsonphotography.blogspot.com/2009/...
Taken with a very old, low resolution miniature point-and-shoot camera which I always keep in my handbag. I wasn't able to lug around my usual kit that day - my fingers were frozen to the bone!
Edited to say: bear in mind that most basic compact cameras will apply some sharpening by default. So adding sharpening later to these JPEGs when you download the files is usually unnecessary, and if you're not careful it can degrade the image quality quite badly. I always turn the sharpening off, if the camera will let me.

To my eyes they are extraordinarily sharp, may I ask what point & shot you used? Rich... Edited to say: bear in mind that most basic compact cameras will apply some sharpening by default. Well, whatever they are some of the clearest and sharpest car photgraphs I have seen certainly in the context of a computer screen. Whatever the camera it must have a very high quality lens and the ability to self focus very accurately? Is it a high number megapixels as well ?Edited to say: bear in mind that most basic compact cameras will apply some sharpening by default. There is a general and almost universal belief that the equipment takes the photograph. Let me reassure you that good results are simply down to technique. Providing you can focus accurately (with a point and shoot all that amounts to is having enough light and the right target - in other words avoid indoor situations where it's dim) and holding the thing steady. Don't do anything to confuse the autofocus, like aiming it at a uniformally, texture-free white or black area. Take a couple of seconds longer than normal to get the camera really steady, then breath in, then breathe out - after you exhale your body will be rock steady, then press the button and keep the camera in position for a couple of seconds longer than you normally would. (These techniques vary slightly when I'm carrying a big heavy SLR and shooting at wide apertures, but the 'no breathing' rule is always in force).
The camera in question is a very old (7 years I think) Canon Ixus, I think it's only 4 mega pixels, slow, clunky, and about as basic as they come, it's more than adequate for those rare days when I'm just being a 'tourist'. Almost any compact camera that you own will be very much 'better' than mine. My Blog contains images taken with a wide variety of equipment - but you'll see they're all sharp and crystal clear - simply by observing the techniques outlined above and thinking through every shot. Do try this next time you're out, you'll see that it does make a big difference
If you see me at an event/Brooklands, feel free to come over and I'll demonstrate.

It never ceases to amaze me that the people at Brooklands do so little to publicise all the events that take place there.
It is open nearly every day of the year. Just walking around a place on that scale with over 100 years of history is amazing enough, the museum and all the sheds are great , the clubhouse is full of history and atmosphere, there is the test hill which hosts motor club event each weekend, the aircraft and hangers, the cafe is really nice and spaceous, they recently opened a much bigger shop, you really can never do it all justice in just one day.
All in all it really is always a nice place to visit, yet because they don't seem on the ball enough to properly advertise what goes on, despite being in the middle of the most massive catchment area they always seem to have so few visitors.
Things like this need supporting to keep them going, there is grave risk of losing motor sport venues at present, so I shall be there on the first of next month, hope to see some of you there, just wrap up warm , so if you have not been there for a while its worthy of our support.
