I've been thinking about getting a 2002 Range rover TD6 vouge with 52K miles to replace my 2001 X5.

How reliable are these? How steep are running and servicing costs (is the servicing variable or at set milages?).
I understand that the car is pretty loaded with electronics and was expensive when new, are older ones trouble?

Cheers.

Hi,

I have a 2003 TD6, mine has a few niggles (which I've since fixed!). If I was buying one again check that the folding mirrors work properly, make sure the self leveling xenon lights are in line as the near side units are renownd for pointing skyward & I'd check that the low range box works. I've never used mine myself as I'm paranoid that it has never been used in 88K miles, so if it ain't broke..........!
The car has more ECU's than I don't know what, and its basically a X5 underneath as every bit of electrical kit has a BMW badge on it. So any traits that are found X5's could be found on the RR. Also, stay away from the petrols, their gearboxes (BMW X5's included) are known for being made from bakelite, I've know three let go, 1 diesel X5 & 2 4.4 V8 RR's. If there are any electrical niggles be wary, the garage I bought mine off also had a 4.4 for sale and the battery died on him, (so what right, just change it) well he did and beacuse he didn't do some stupid combo like leave a back door open, when re-connecting the battery it surged a circuit and blew the radio amp, £400 to replace...well good!
All in all when the car's behaving its a dream to drive, I did a 400 mile trip the other month and we all got out as fresh as when we got in it. These cars are a pain in the a5re if you get one with gremlins but if you find a good'un it'll be a joy to own.
As the bloke who I bought mine off said cheesily... Why turn up in a car when you can ARRIVE in a Range Rover!!!biggrin

Chris

Oh and running costs are a bit poo for a diesel, you get anywhere from 19 - 28 mpg depending on your driving style and type of commute.
