The Armed Services, the next election and the people.
Discussion
Very much a 'what if' question.
I'm very, very impressed with the current upswell of positive opinion from the general public towards the Armed Services. Its well deserved and about time too IMHO. I've never seen so many people wearing poppies as I have this year, the same emblem on the premiership players shirts yesterday and the immaculately observed minutes silence at all the grounds & even that soldiers songs record heading up the charts.
My question would be (and it is a very big IF)
IF the government found some way to delay the election for 'security' reasons as has been discussed on here many a time, with the extra support they now enjoy from the public does anyone think the army might step in and would the population be in favour of it?
Tanks in Parliament Square anyone?

It is the one thing they cannot overrule the House of Lords on, in any way. It cannot legally be forced through. So an extension of a government is unlikely unless it is has a genuine reason.
It didn't stop them holding an election in 1945 when we were already pretty busy with the end of the war, so what kind of security reason they would be able to convince both houses to back would have to be very extreme.

In the very late 60's/early 70's we were 3 weeks away from having troops on every street corner. This was a Wilson government plan to deal with financial meltdown. A few years later, the Army upper echelons took it upon themselves to demonstrate to the government that they were coming very close to the military taking things into their own hands. This was manifested in an overt show of intent when the army took over the security at Heathrow for a few days in the mid 70's. The implicit message was crystal clear even to this, then little boy...I'm very, very impressed with the current upswell of positive opinion from the general public towards the Armed Services. Funny but both of those people ended up killed by the IRA...........
Given the various laws passed by labour with regard to protests and civil contingency in the event of an emergency, it's a distinct possibility that this is exactly what will happen, no doubt with either a massive terrorist bomb somewhere (my guess would be something that hits the M25 or airports) or the latest version of ManBearPig flu fever..............which will no doubt be caused by the vaccine!
However I can’t see the majority doing anything about it, unless it affects “strictly big brother get me out of X factor on ice” if things happen it will be in small and local protests that will result in a few arrests, no reports on the BBC and hopefully the odd lynched labour mp

You can't see people doing something about it? There would be more than a few lynched MPs I believe and for once I'd be grateful to see rent a mob having something to fight about if the government tried using the army or police to enforce a suspension of democracy. However I can’t see the majority doing anything about it, unless it affects “strictly big brother get me out of X factor on ice” if things happen it will be in small and local protests that will result in a few arrests, no reports on the BBC and hopefully the odd lynched labour mp

Sadly, I think you underestimate the apathy of the general public.
It is certainly possible. But if you consider how many have been on the streets protesting over the last years about the actions of this waste of space bunch of self serving scum which claims to be our Govt.
I don't think (at least I hope) that people would let them fail to grant us an election.

The army had very strong suspicions that Wilson was a communist stooge so were very much on their guard against him. The whole fuss over the Spycatcher book was that amongst 1000 pages of whinging about his pension Peter Wright told a story about a "senior Tory figure" discussing with him the chances of a coup with I think (its a long term since I've read it) Lord Mountbatten as a figurehead. The senior Tory figure was rumoured to be Airey Neave (sp).
Funny but both of those people ended up killed by the IRA...........
I've still got a copy of Spycatcher.Funny but both of those people ended up killed by the IRA...........
Let's not forget the bit where some people within MI6 'fix' a UK General Election.
Our armed forces have been sent into a war based on lies and deceit buy a government that claims to want to bring democracy to those countries while it seeks to deprive this country of the privilege that same democracy.
To add insult to injury these brave people are badly equipped, badly supported and those that pay the highest price for this illegal war are treated like crap by the very government that send them into harms way.
I have noticed that is a growing number of senior officers fron the armed services who are speaking out and openly critical of the Government.
If there were some form of military coup with power being returned to the crown I for one would welcome it.
TBH I am amazed that it hasn't already happened, but that reinforces the unquestioning dedication of our soldiers.
