Hello

I have decided on a Nikon D5000 but need some advice on which lens to buy, please.

I will use the camera for general family and days out duties which will include motorsport. From my (limited) research I understand that a 300mm lens is recommended for motorsport purposes.

So as I see it I have two options:

1] Buy the D5000 kit with 18 - 70 lens and the Nikon 70 - 300 lens (which with the DSLR anomaly equates to a 450mm lens). The downsides to my mind being ingress of dust when changing the lens and the need to carry two lenses around.

2] Buy the D5000 body and the Nikon 18 - 200 lens (which with the DSLR anomaly equates to a 300mm lens). The big bonus being one lens for all purposes (and is a better quality lens than the kit 18 - 70 lens?)and minimal reason for dust to be introduced into the camera. But is the 200mm lens big enough for motorsport photography?

Which way would you go?

TBH you'll probably find you get some dust on the sensor even if you never change lenses. Dust is bloody clever stuff and it just loves a sensor.

If you do go the two lens route only change lenses outside, with the camera off and the 'hole' facing the ground.

The 18-200 is a bit soft at the edges.

Horses for courses, I guss it depends how much motorsport, wildlife you intend to do (the 70-300 is a great lens)

Little difference in dust ingress between the two options if you are sensible. My paranoid friend at work (who's so far sold 3 DSLRs because they had a small speck of dust on the sensor he didn't even try to clean!) changed from canon to Nikon specifically for the 18-200. His D80 only ever had one lens on it, and he still got dust on the sensor... The 18-200mm is a serious trombone, and as the build quality is very "consumer" is sucks in a lot of air. No better than a decent kit lens and 70-300 I'd say.

The 70-300 lens is fantastic. For general use consider the 18-105 I think the image quality is very good for a £200 lens.

forget worrying about dust on the sensor -- the camera is a tool -- use it....

you can always get the sensor cleaned or have a go yourself

OT : Hi Ian wavey -- the lens is great....

Go for the twin kit. I work in a photograpghic shop servicing lenes etc. If you open up a 18-200 or the like, there is way to much free movement in the parts to withstand any sort of hardship, and at the top end, that lens gets soft. Plus always looks better in the kit bag having 2 len's. And youl'll get dust regardless, just one of those things.

Cool! Glad you like it! Hey, you owe me a picture from it in its new home! I got my Nikon 70-200mm f2.8 a week ago and that's a top lens too.

Assuming you’re constrained by a bit of a budget

16-85 much better optically than the normal 'kit' lenses

Avoid the 18-200 it is too short even with a DX camera.

70-300 VR II better than the cost would indicate.

If money were no object or you sell something big 70-200 f2.8 and 300 f2.8 prime and buy the pro level D300 instead of the D5000

I wouldn't compromise your lens choice by worrying about 'ingress of dust'. This is a bogey blown out of proportion by marketing departments.

In your position I'd go for 18-70 and 70-300. Until you have megabucks to spend, it's an ideal combo IMHO.
