the garage tells me the "evaporator" unit has had it and to replace it he will need the dashboard off as it is located in an area which cannot be accessed by the engine bay. any bright ideas to save a few quid?

Disconnect the wires to the compressor and forget you ever had air-con. Very inexpensive sollution.
