318/320Ci M-Sport - tell me what I need to look for

My mind is made up and I am looking for the right 318Ci M-Sport or 320Ci M-Sport. What do I need to know and look for when viewing cars? I'm aware of rear coils and being an ex car-salesman am pretty clued up on the usual car buying stuff. I want to be sure I'm not missing anything specific to this model, and being my first BMW am being very choosy.

Well firstly the 320Ci is a 6 cylinder 2.2 and the 318Ci is a 4 cylinder 2.0. The 2.2 litre engine has the same running costs as the 2.5 and 3.0 variants so you might as well get one of those.

Secondly the M Sport's are very rare as they only appeared towards the end of E46 production, most will be simply 'Sport' models. There is no difference bar the name.
