Looking at buying a Cerbera. Something tells me to go for the 4.5 but is there a massive difference? And what about the popping, is it only on the 4.5?

Any advice? Thanks.

The generally accepted consensus is that the 4.2's are the sweeter motor on standard mapping, part throttle response etc, and also the outright power difference is not that great.

On the other hand, some of the early 4.2s have suffered with crank failure and, once properly mapped the 4.5s will make big power.

They'll all pop on the overrun due to the amount of overlap on the cams - decat it and you get flames toobiggrin

I think that the main thing is to get a good one - though I do think that if I'd bought a 4.2 I'd always have wondered if there was something I was missing out on. Probably says more about me than the car though...

You wouldnt notice the difference between the 2, performance wise, both are blisteringly quick, Buy a Cerb on condition alone.

The price difference between a "like for like" 4.2 and 4.5 would be about £1000 I'd have thought. £7K means either one is massively over/underpriced, or they are massively different year/condition etc.etc..

I wanted a 4.5 but got a 4.2, right car came along smile

I think the 4.5 must be very overpriced. Would the 30k mile difference be the £7k? Also the 4.5 has 12 months warranty which presumably would be reflected in the price?

I doubt the warranty will be worth much, great if it does come through, but expect them to wiggle.

£7K would pay to fix a lot (although not everything).

Are you looking at the £18K 4.5 at TVR Centre?

When looking at Cerbs of any age (particularly 98 / 99 cars) check chassis very very carefully. Get it on ramps, get a torch etc...

Privately will buy you a lot more car for your money (and you can buy from a pistonheader). You can a late 4.5 RR for not much more.

4.5 all the way. If you can strech to a LW, then great - bu tI prefer the view out of the windscreen of the original ones (i.e. looking out of a letterbox!)

Do get the suspension sorted though - and you'll have a car than can run with all of the top exotica.

As a single statistic, mileage isn't something you should worry about. Frequently used Cerbs are - huge generalisation - a better bet than 'low mileage' ones. At least they were reliable until you bought it (He says with 70K coming up on the clock)

Condition and History are most important (and the knowledge and attitude of the current owner are a personal guide for me too)

I've only just recently bought a 4.2 and to be honest i really don't feel like i'm missing out a great deal with regard to the 4.5. In the real world you'd never be able to separate them - get them on the track with a talented wheelman and then the difference may become apparent. As already has been said buy what you can afford and on condition.

Finally once purchased - Enjoy !!! smile

A well sorted 4.2 is 360-380 bhp, a well sorted 4.5 is 400-420. Not a lot of difference.
Buy the best condition one you can find with the upgrades you want already done.

Having had the chance the other week to drive a "healthy" 4.5LW and my own 4.2 back to back, I found that the 4.5 seemed to have a more linear power delivery compared to the 4.2 which only seems to come on cam after about 3750rpm then go bananas once past 5000rpm.

Whilst the 4.5 was the quicker car, the way the 4.2 behaves above 3750rpm makes it "feel" faster (if that makes any sense ?).

Never driven a 4.2 but since I had mine tweaked with the short induction and rolling road remap it is a different car both at low and high speeds or revs. Its smoother, massive tourque 350 lbs and have to say once over 5000 its a rocket ship. With that long pedal its sometimes easy not too push it all the way as it feels silly fast already. The other week I was in third at about 5k and 80 mph and i did find the bottom woh it was damp the rear wheels let go and caused a little sphincter moment. You realize then what power you have when you truly unleash it. Makes me grin as I sit here thinking about it. A V8 is a V8 whether 4.2 or 4.5 but I sure know which one I want?? and have lol enjoy and be carefull with the loud pedal.

I can fully understand that.

Chap at work had a 250cc 2stroke until recently and as it hit the power band it took off and "Felt" really fast.
He now has a Hyabusa with a linear power deliver like a 747! "Much faster than I am", he now says!

But!

How many 4.2's have had a lot of money spent on them upgrading to the 4.5 spec brakes??
Generally said by a number of owners on here they need it.
Would a cost for this help comparisons??

4.5's have slightly higher diff gearing and some people just don't like the revvy feel of the Cerbera anyway. (bikers love them!)

4.5's have the more progressive Hydratrak LSD, which has a sort of hydraulic pump that tries to force oil through small holes and thus exerts a resistance proportional to relative wheel speed difference.
4.2's have a mechanical LSD, and some say they prefer how this works/feels

Did not the 4'2's come with 16" wheels and tyres?
4.5's come with 17" as standard.
Although a lot have had upgrades to 18".
Check as there is a cost if you want to upgrade.

But the real difference is power! My particular 4.5 was doing 358BHP and remapped up to 413 and that is VERY noticeable and actually makes it a real bd!

Just what the Devil would drive?? smile

Same advice as above. I had my heart set on a 4.5 but after talking to people in the know, they said a standard 4.2 can be just as quick as a standard 4.5. Some even had both and thought their 4.2 was quicker than their 4.5. Only difference is when it comes to tuning. There is more power to be found in a 4.5 if you go down that route.;; I ended up buying a 4.2 only because it was the best car i could find for the money i had. Have i been disapointed? You must be kidding. After 7 yrs of ownership i still love it and it really is OH so quick.
