Motorists in Jail

Harsh sentancing or too many lawbreakers?

The head of the prision service is reported to have expressed concerns about the number of motoring offenders and other petty criminals that are being jailed.

According a report on the ITV website, Martin Narey says that four times more motorists are being put behind bars compared with ten years ago. He's quoted as saying, "Custody rates for some quite petty offending have quadrupled, motoring offences for example. They don't need to be in jail in such numbers ."

This increase in custodial sentances comes despite fewer motorists being convicted currently.

The AA expressed concerns about his comments though, pointing out that most motorists receiving jail sentances were for serious offences such as driving whilst disqualified, driving without insurance or causing death by dangerous driving.

Perhaps it just shows that too many motorists have scant regard for the law these days...?

There are thousands of people on the roads of this country without tax, insurance or licences and without the deterent of prison they will just carry on driving.

Magistrates in this country are already far too lenient
- I have seen cases where someone caught driving whilst disqualified has just had TWO MONTHS added to his existing ban. What deterent is this???

This news also appeared in the Sun, where it goes on to mention that a motorist was jailed for 14 days for being 8mph over the limit...

However, I should point out that it didn't state whether he was driving whilst disqualified, etc.

Don't know how true that story is though, as I can find no reference to it.

But maybe that's because I'm not looking hard enough.

I think he was the guy that refused to pay the fine and take the points because he said he wasn't doing anything dangerous. (The fine ended up being £400 after going to court).
He then refused to pay that and was sent down.

Saw on TV he was released today after 7 days and he said that if they still try to get the fine he'll go down again.
