It will be done on the Constructors after the winning WDC number 1 is given.
So Jenson gets 1, Rosberg (or whoever
)gets 2, Vettel gets 3 (because Red Bull finished second in the constructors, their drivers get 3 and 4) Webber gets 4, Lewis will get 5 due to McLaren finishing 3rd in the WCC rather than Lewis finishing 5th in the WDC. Yep, assuming everyone carries on as per previous years IINM, we'll have:
1. Jenson Button
2. Probably Nico Rosberg
3. Seb Vettel
4. Mark Webber
5. Lewis Hamilton
6. Kimi or Heikki
7. Fernando Alonso
8. Felipe Massa
9. Rubens Barrichello
10. Nico Hulkenberg
11. Probably Timo Glock
12. Robert Kubica
14. Adrian Sutil
15. Vito Liuzzi
16. Sebastian Buemi
17. Jaime Alguersari
The next numbers will be taken by the new teams. God knows what order they'll be in.
However, it might be worth an outside bet on car no. 22 being as that car has won the WDC by finishing 5th in Brazil for the last 2 years.

Maybe - but not by the process you suggest: car numbers are allocated on team position, after the World Champion gets number 1 on his car, the remainder of numbers are allocated by finishing order in the constructors championship.
So depending on what Button does; Hamilton is likely to end up with number 5 (or 6)(as you say - but because McLaren were 3rd in the CWC), number 2 (if Button jumps to McLaren!) or even number 7 or 8 if Button were to jump somewhere else!
Odds on you are right though...McLaren then just need to get the right tin of paint out!!

I can't see McLaren painting the car number red unless it is a part of their Santander/Vodafone livery. getting slightly off the topic, mansell was unfairly blamed for the mclaren debacle. granted he could be somewhat petulant, although i remain a big mansell fan, however the car he was given was an absolute pig. it was just a sack of s--t which was slow, cumbersome, incredibly ugly, handled crap & was generally an all round bad car.
hardly mansells fault was it?
i do however think it would be good to see red 5 on lewis's car. i think that lewis is one of the best racers of the current era & i genuinely think that had this years mclaren been good from the start he would have retained his title.
i was at the mercedes bash @ brooklands yesterday. it was a good day out & gave the fans - remember us bernie?- the chance to see some current pukka f1 cars up close. the track was wet however lewis put on a great show as did anthony davidson in the brawn.
more please. the fans need the chance to see these great machines up close & personal...
the highlight for me was lewis. at the end of his last f1 demo he jumped into an amg mercedes saloon with his brother nick in the front passenger seat. at the end of the straight he had the thing sideways. i could clearly see nick with a huge grin on his face. surely the happiest bloke out there yesterday.
how good it was to see lewis having some fun with his brother. great stuff lewis. thank you.
it was a joy to behold. i hope that you are proud of your brother. he is an inspiration to us all by not using his disability to seek sympathy. he enjoys himself & it is clear just how much lewis thinks of his brother.

Mansell couldn't fit in the McLaren they built for him, his hips were too wide for the tub they made, so they lost a lot of time whilst they produced a wider tub. You could say he should be able to live with that lack of comfort, but driving position is paramount when you have such long races with high G, you also have to remember he was still recovering from a very badly damaged back from his indy car crash at Pheonix. It was all downhill from there.

Senna had the same viewpoint IINM.I think the drivers should be able to choose their numbers and stick with them, like they do in MotoGP. But then F1 could learn a lot from MotoGP in terms of being a bit more relaxed and not having stupid rules for unnecessary things....
Ferrari obviously had their famous 27 but I also remember the days when Tyrell were traditionally numbers 3 and 4. Didn't McLaren have 7 and 8 when they weren't carrying the first two numbers (which wasn't often back in my early F1 days!)
