just spent some time in my favourite country, japan, about 90% of the photos I took are of things I was about to eat, so I thought someone, somewhere, may be interested to see them

Yakitori in Sapporo, after getting of the plane from london

arctic crab in the Sapporo market

Engrish

DIY "Genghis Khan" BBQ

VERY good meal at a tiny restaurant which server Japanese/Italian food

Superb tonkatsu at Butagumi in Tokyo

Pretty but not very exciting Soba noodles at some posh place in Tokyo

Mosburger - the japanese McDonalds

Kyoto style sushi, in Kyoto - very good!

Edomae (normal) sushi for breakfast in Osaka

The Yamazaki "Whisky Library"

Hiroshima Yaki - too much sweet brown sauce - a common problem in japan...

Great tonkotsu-ramen in Hakata (and pudding)

Tempura & grilled beef in a roadside stall in hakata

not food - but a good view on the way home

Hope these are of interest to someone!

Great idea for a thread. Wish I'd remembered to photograph some of my dinners abroad.

PS - with regard to the first picture, you should take the pic before you've eaten it, not after! biggrin

i was so hungry for that meal, having been on a 12 hour flight from london - tokyo, then waited three hours, flown up to sapporo, got the train into town, found my hotel (n the rain), then wandered around trying to find somewhere nice to eat for about an hour, that each time a course came i forgot to take a photo before it was eaten! (until the last couple, which is what there are photos of - although you can see I took a bite out of one of them first as well)

Japan, a place i must visit one day! Your food looks wonderful and so much better than much of the processed rubbish on offer in the UK.

What else did you do in Japan other than eat?

Wow, Dcw.

That looks beautiful. I'm amazed at the intricacy of proper Japanese cooking, it is always a true masterclass in finishing. I hope you enjoyed your trip. I've never been to Japan, but I can't wait for the time when I can spend a month there.

Thanks for posting.

Loving the photos. Not the sort of food I would choose but the sort of thing I would love to try if that makes sense wobble

Looks superb. Thanks.

What are the prices like and is it normal to have so much English translation on offer or is that just the hotels?

people have an idea about japan being meg expensive, but with the current exchange rates it's cheaper than france IMO. English is VERY thin on the ground, even in touristy areas, so if you aren't comfortable gesturing and pointing it probably isn't the place for you. I really wish I could speak even a little bit of Japanese, I really feel that I miss out on so much.

So I've heard. I've considered a couple of job openings over there, but the advice from the wise and experienced have told me that a basic grasp of the language is pretty much essential.

That said, I'm more than happy to perform old-fashioned English pointing and gesturing, so a long trip there is still on the cards..

If your job doesn't involve teaching english then I think you must be right. AFAIK learning to speak japanese is not super hard (although more so than european languages), it's the reading and writing that is the killer

No shortage of great Japanese restaurants here in Sydney, Sir.
