Mille Miglia 2010

Hi Folks

I would like a bit of advice here!

I have got it in my head that watching the Mille Miglia next year would be a great way of seeing Italy and watching one of the most iconic road races of all time.

Whats it like as a spectator event?

Has anybody got any advice or info?

Not much on the web about this so any info would be appreciated.

Me and Mrs D went to watch it this year, although we confined ourselves to staying in Rome and watching it in the evening. It was a fantastic experience and the atmosphere was like no other motorsport event I've experienced before. The amount of exitement and borderline euphoria was contagious and the time flew by - we left at about 1.30am in the end, having watched the cars since about 7 or 8pm and it seemed like it had only been a couple of hours.That's not to mention the fantastic smell of all those magnificent cars!

The competitors were all really friendly too - although if you're going to "follow" the event, be prepared for a tiring few days. The people I spoke to were all are going to bed late and getting up early, a few of them were flagging to say the least. Obviously, you'd be travelling in a slightly more luxurious manner than they were, but you'll need to be quite a way ahead of them to spectate properly as they go through major towns, as you won't be getting the rolling Police roadblock that they got when they entered Rome!

I'd definitely go again and I'd be certain to go to Rome for that atmosphere......

I haven't looked at the route, but Buonconvent in Tuscany is a pretty good village to watch from. The cars pass through slowly and have stopped there for lunch in the past. It's not that crowded and you can combine it with a trip to Chianti (trust me - they send the worst wines here, well worth a try), Siena, Florence etc. Rome is only a couple of hours away as well. You might be able to catch the race on the way back as well.

we stayed in Pienza , Tuscany last year, when we looked on you tube, we found that the mille miglia passes thru the village.
nice hotel in village. we drove the route up to sienna, stunning.

just booked 8 day holiday in may, staying on the coast for 4 days , then down to tuscany for the other 4 days, knowing that the classic race will pass through the area whilst in tuscany.
wifey happy to indulge in a day of classic cars !

I hope that you know that the dates of the Mille Miglia have just been changed and it will start I think on Thursday 6th May eve 7.30pm first cars away.

It was changd by the FIA because of the Monaco F1.

I hope you have your holiday dates booked right

Thank goodness for that, the Mille Miglia organisers have had to change 1,200 hotels because of this, wouldn't fancy that job plus all the tour operators have the same job.

Im thinking of seeing the start or finish as its only a couple of hours from us. Downside is I expect that to be the most crowed place.

Probably take the Bristol - anyone know a good place to park up??

We are off today ferry from the Island to Barcelona, then drive up to Durbuy meet up with some friends then drive down through Switzerland,Italian Lakes stopping eventually at Brescia to watch the Rally come through, should be a good run for the Corvette.

My brother is marrying an italian in Mantova the weekend the MM is on, such a lovely coincidence. I'll be watching the MM pretty much everyday I'm out there.

I'm watching it, I will find a nice grassy field along a twisty section of road in Northern Tuscany, set up the deck chair with a few cold beers and watch them all hurtle by, can't wait.
