Better gift... Photo on canvas, or painter to do it in oil?

As per the title really....
Which would make the better gift, it is a print of a friend and her twin sister at her sisters wedding, choice of either getting it printed onto canvas or paying an artist to do it in oil paints...
Fair price difference, but if the canvas print is going to look tat then obviously worth paying more!

Oil paints would be lovely - just find a good painter.
If you are going to get one printed in canvas, just choose a company that uses a decent quality canvas as there is a vast vast difference in quality between them. If you have a chance go to the place and have a good feel - if it's thin sn flimsy and you can scratch the coating off the canvas - go elsewhere

Cost a fortune as well.We have a lovely painted canvas showing both of us, atleast we assume it's both of us and it could be both of us, and the fact it was given to us means it probably is of us, I'm sure you get what I am saying here, if it had been a print I would know it was us. If you want to do something arty get a good photo post process it on a PC then print it, unless you know a really good portrait artist.
Or to put it more bluntly, a Print will be as good as the photo but only ever that good, a Painting can be infinetly better than the picture it is from, but it can also end up tucked up a corner only coming out when you visit until even that pretence is too much effort.

A canvas print can look a little flat, but it will be recognisable
A decent artist may tell you that your photo is not very good, do you have another one
He could possibly ask additional photos even if your project pic is good.
He may request to be allowed to take another photo himself.
He should, if local, invite you to have a peek at his progress to try to get an idea how you feel about it so far.
He will work with you regarding the zit on the forehead etc.
Producing a portrait that is maybe 30 x 24 from family snapshot leaves a lot of scope.
The worst one of course is "can you paint my dog" (who died last year)
They have one 2 x 3 picture of a black dog.
A compromise could be some of these Chinese artists, they are prestty good.
Russians also, although I've seen some that I could have done

Do the subjects like the actual photo of themselves.
How many times have you heard "That doesn't look like me" when looking at family snaps.
