I have finally figured out how these work: the plug is drilled and taped for the vent fitting without disturbing the hex socket face in the center of the plug, the plug is then mounted in the transaxle. Then a copper sealing washer is placed on the fitting which is then screwed in the plug. The washer seals the bottom of the fitting to the plug.

Clear as mud until now.

Ken,
Put a little antiseize on those pipe plugs when you go to install them. You don't really need it on brass plug but the steel plug is a 'beeyatch' to remove from the aluminum case after a while. Had to pull a small torch out for that job last time. Steel and aluminum just don't mix.
Cheers!
