What it's like getting a Stylus/Fury through the IVA?
Discussion
Question on behalf of my dad who's Stylus is finally beginning to resemble a car after more than a decade in bits... Can he anticipate much hassle putting it through the IVA?
Apparently he has a very early Zetec, which would have met (or bipassed?) the emissions requirements for the SVA on carbs and without a cat, due to its age. Would that be okay in the IVA? Any other points to watch out for? The interior has SVA-compiant radiuses on all the edges and things like that already.

As long ashe emissions are correct for the age on the engine then indeed no problem, but you will need proof of the age of the engine. I believe that it is possible to get this from Ford, but I don't know the procedure.
You can download the IVA manual here

some of it is a bit obscure, though, but it is essential reading for anyone taking the test

Any Stylus-specific points that owners have picked up?
I put my Stylus through a few months back. It was OK but didnt pass as I built it to the SVA rules. The difference for me was changing the seat.
I bought a Stylus seat (no headrest), but did have padding etc fixed to the roll bar. However the seat was on runners. If you have a head restraint not fixed to the seat, the seat must can not be movable. However there is not a set distance from seat to head restraint. So you can fix the seat in the furthest forward or rearward position to comply!?!!
Problem 2. Wheels stuck out of the bodywork. This used to be ok on the SVA. My rears are OK but fronts stick out by a few mm. So I bought some rubber strip to edge the wheel arch & added some extra camber for the test.
Problem 3. I needed a light to tell me when the lights are on.
Other comments that I discovered. The fuel cap key & ignition key are to be the same. If you dont have a windscreen the area in front of the steering wheel now has to have radiused edges etc.
Another thing is I did not have reversing lights on originally. This is now a requirement. I used the clear side repeater lights for this - very cheap & stick on. Operated via a dash switch & another indicator light. They are only to tell other people you are reversing (maybe a buzzer or horn could do the same, in which case a dash indicator would not be needed.
Chassis number needs to be 14 digits long IIRC. Use the Stylus issued numbers & add your initials/date/phone-number or vital stats to make it long enough.
So you should have no problem, good luck.

I don't believe this is true. The manual says the cap must be tethered to the vehicle or it must not be possible to remove the key from the cap in the unlocked position.Kevp said:

Number needs to be 17 digits. You need a plate with the manufacturers identity and the VIN mounted somewhere that would not normally be removable. Also the VIN has to be stamped into the chassis on the offside of the vehicle and in 7mm high characters. Also certain characters I, O, Q, dashes and asterisks are not allowed.Steve

a questions: a zetec never came with carburators, so even the first zetec was under a certain emmision limits and laws, which you will never achieve on carbs. is that correct?

Steve. Im only saying what the examiner told me with regards to the fuel cap key. His comment was due to the fact that I did not have an ignition key. Perhaps if the cap is tethered this is not a requirement.
Yes 2 ID plates are required. You must stamp them into the front right hand chassis member. It can be mounted on a plate, then welded on. Riveting is out.
Re Engine. I have a Zetec as well. If it passes an MOT it should be OK on emissions. I had to get a letter from Ford addressed to me stating the age of my engine. Ford charge for this or you can fax. 0906 5533447 was the number at £1 per minute or fax 01922 725266. Ford Technical Information Centre, PO Box 300, Walsall, WS5 4QH. Check details as this was from my 2004 paperwork. My engine has the code JK in the number making it a 1988.
