Opening my NAT

How do i set my NAT to open?

I'm sure there used to be a setting option that just allowed you to choose if it was open or strict.

Mine is showing as strict and i can't find the option to "open" it

Any ideas>?

an SMC something or other.

Its also cable braodband with virgin (if that matters?!)

Find your Xbox IP address 192.168.1.something (probably)

Open your router. Find the DMZ - Add this IP to DMZ - Job done.

If you are computer savvy you should be ok - if not let me know.

Refer to your routers manual for the DMZ bit

My online gaming has been spot on since chucking the Xbox in a DMZ

Just make sure you always keep the cabling the same, as you don't want to be swapping the cables at any point and accidentally sticking your PC in a DMZ

I can access my router no problems, and add items to the DMZ, where do I find my Xbox's IP?

From memory, console settings under the settings menu, then networking?

Alternatively the ARP table / attached devices table in your router should list it with it's IP!

Run a test - then when it says about IP click on the tab

Alternatively - got to your network settings and give the Xbox a manual IP address

Hmm added my xbox ip to my DMZ and enabled it.

Turned xbox back on and it now won't let me sign into xbox live at all?

Annoying.

So i've had to turn DMZ back off

Google for the ports required and forward them to the Xbox IP. Some routers cannot be set to open dependant on their security. (The best I can acheive on my Sonicwall is 'Medium')

Does your router have an option for UPnP? If so, turn that on and the xbox can set up the ports itself.

OP, another option would be setting a manual IP on the console and then forwarding whatever the ports are in the router to that IP.

Some routers are just ste though...like mine...

Do you have to be hardwired into the router to get into these settings? As my NAT is a grumpy wench that needs a beating.

google how to put the xbox into a static ip (i have ps3 so not sure on xbox,), then put the static ip address into a dmz. if you're on wireless, the ip address given to the router will change depending on whether there other devices attached to it. you may have set up a dmz for one address, but if it has changed, then that could be why your nat hasn't changed.

I have a bad feeling that I'm going to have to live with a strict NAT, I'm on a university halls network

already pushing it, Xbox uses ICS through the PC, which is apparently frowned upon
