The reason i`m asking is that i`m making plans for a new garage and i`m thinking of installing an RSJ with carefully placed piers across the garage for lifting out engines (or bodywork). I`ll look into it for the span i have and see what size i`d need, its it getting s big deep i`ll have issues with fitting it in, as i have a constrained ridge height of 2.5m to avoid Planning Permission.

Or is the bodywork heavier?

Thanks

121kgs for the engine, T5 gearbox about 40kgs.

+ ancillaries.

Bodywork would be heavy i'd imagine, but don't know sorry.

At a guess I would say body must weigh at least half the total car weight but it may be as much as 65%.

With a 2.5m ridge height I doubt you will have sufficient height unless you use the RSJ as your ridge support. It would require substantial steelwork above the door though. Doable but not cheap.

According to 07b_brow.pdf (a structural analysis document, it can be found on the www if you Google for it) the GRP bodywork is listed as 107.5kg!

I don't know which model of TVR this refers to though.

The body has got to weigh more than 107kg. TVR recommend that 8 are required to lift it, even if they are erring on the cautios side of H&S, lets say 4 people.

The car weighs 1250kg, engine and Gearbox and ancillaries say 250kg. That leaves 1000kg. I have a chassis here and 2 men can lift it reasonably easily, it's heavy but not a huge struggle for 2, so I'm guessing round about 200kg. So were left with 800kg.

Subtract the weight of the Wheels, tyres, suspension and we have left erm, errr scratchchin

Well that one of the authors of that report was Neill Anderson and a host of others at Cranfield University so I assume all measurements were careful and precise.

I'd assume that it would be totally bare, no paint, no electrics, no fuel tank, no seats/trim etc.

And probably no roll cage either.

Don't forget all the bits you don't remove from body for chassis refurb like fuel tank, aircon and heater matrix, instruments etc.

It would be good to lift the whole body with doors, bot lid attached too.

If I was building a garage with lifting beam from scratch I would want to be able to lift at least 1 tonne and probably 1.5 tonnes. Much easier to over spec. than increase at a later stage.

Why not just buy a crane like the rest of us.. they have the useful facility of being able to be moved when you remove the engine ..

The bare chassis does not weigh 200kg. I lifted my chassis pretty easily on my own. I would say absolute max of 100kg if that.

Thanks all, i stink storer is correct and i should be specifying the beam to take a tonne. I`ll go do some quick calcs and see what size beam i need for my 4m span. Guessing it wont be small.

If thats the case i`ll abandon the ideas and stick to a crane- and come up with something clever should i need to get the bodywork off.

254x146x37 should do it. I`ll go price one up and see if i can get that to work, might have to sit slightly ower than the eaves, and may cause an issue for someone a bit taller than myself!

Cheers

Alex

Not a bad guess Mark. Being a sad bd I've just been and weighed it - 84.7 Kg's. That surprised me cos I thought it was pretty heavy! When you said you "Lifted it easily on your own" I hope you don't mean you picked it up with one hand, tucked it under your arm, and walked round the garage with it" - If you did, I'm keeping out of your way on a Friday night in town!! biggrin
