TD5 IS JUNK.
Oh wow a rational argument without any qualifier..!!
My brother's on his 2nd Landy. The 1st was a 300 which he chose because of the flat-earth people telling him that was the one to go for and that anything ECU-controlled was evil. Then, while he was changing down from 5th to 3rd to get up the A38 at the foot of the M5 because the engine was as flaccid as wet fart, I believe he might have had a revelation because when his Landy was stolen, thus prompting him to buy another, he wouldn't look at anything BUT a TD5 and has been rewarded with a massively capable car.

I know you work on them. So maybe you just find the tdi easier to work on. But there's no logical reason or by any means were you can look at figures where the tdi is a better engine. It's old, big heavy and under powered and after the first few tweaks expensive and difficult to get even small gains from. They are not very smooth or refined, not very economical and reliability wise have proven no better than what the TD5 has done so far. BTW I'm on my 3rd tuned tdi

I earn my living from repairing the L/Rover product which is in the main a good product but we get so p155ed off changing heads, wireing looms etc, etc on the TD5.
When you have a good engine like the old 300TDI and they drop it for emmision reasons instead of working out a fix I find it hard to swallow, both the 200 and 300 TDI's are good long life engines which with a little R+D would have worked out well, just look at the 2.8 TGV which was based on the 300, what a great engine which we have been fitting as a replacement to the TD5, we have more problems with the TD5 than the 300TDI and I think most inderpendant L/Rover repair people will agree.
Landrovers are great and I still run three for our own use but not a TD5 to be seen.

a few important points raised there , i guess its a bit of swings and roundabouts and luck of the draw .. you either get a good un or a bad un whatever the vehicle / engine etc ... i had years of trouble free/ daily drive motoring in my Rover V8 powered Chimaera rain or shine... the only real issue was when i tried to 'upgrade' the HT leads from standard Land Rover ... so can't be all bad
I will give it more thought and see whats about ... given the choice i would prob have the Anniversary v8 Defender and sod the fuel costs ... not sure i could live with auto box ..??!!!
I have spent weeks trying to find a good genuine Disco ES manual for sensible money , seem to be as rare as the proverbial rocking horse droppings ... oh well the search continues
