I've always had Lotus's and TVR's until now. I currently have a '97 Chimaera that I've had for 18mths but I have 2 small sons (1yr and 3yrs) and I am finding it increasingly difficult to get out in a 2 seater (even though I love it)... I need a 2plus2.
I am considering changing to the dark side... I have looked at the guff on 911's and can see that the 993 really offers the closest to what I think I want, although I am on a limited budget.
How much less would you expect a Cat D 993 to be worth... I know that a TVR that is on the register is worth 25-30% less even if it is immaculate... is this the case with a Porsche or would you advise to stay well clear??.

Thanks boys
I am thinking of looking at a '95 993 Convertible with 33k miles of fPsh and documented repair with an engineers certificate for insurance.
(The reason for looking at a rag top is that this represents about 75% of the fun factor for me with the TVR so it would have to be a minimum of a Targa if I am going to defect...
I've looked at the classified and it looks like this would be worth about 28-35k so what do you think at £20k if it looks good??

If you are going to hang on to it for a long time, fair enough. A repaired porker is still probably better screwed together than something out of the box from Blackpool.
However, expect to have a tough time at resale flogging it on.
A Boxster S would be a better bet if you could do without the rear seats.

Thanks again for the info.
Some of you boys really seem to have a downer on TVR's and I haven't got a clue why. They are truely great cars I can promise you.
For the record, I've not had one single problem with my Chim and I love it to bits. The single only reason to change is the rear seats so it completely rules out the Boxster... I would much sooner keep what I have as it's a known quantity and is actually very practical - it has a huge boot (easily capable of taking 2 sets of golf clubs that you lot seem to talk about a lot!)

I personally try to keep golf club talk to a minimum around here. And cupholder talk.
A decent 993 will be fun, but TVRs arguably have more character and more performance unless you delve into the world of 993 Turbo 4 or 993RS. As you like cabrios this causes a problem!
Some people here have a downer about TVRs for good reason - ask Scottster about his fabled Griffith etc. - but others (like Don) live happily with both marques. People may choose a Porsche because they need more build quality or reliability than other more specialist makes can offer (I came from a Lotus Carlton!). The sacrifice of ultimate performance for a bit of galvanisation or non-squeaking dashboard leaves its mark on the psyche.
Good luck with the search but I'd recommend a non Cat D 993 Targa or Cab, or if practicality is paramount, how about an E39 M5? They can be had for 25k these days and Derestrictor has got an unofficial 180mph out of his (where conditions permitted!!!).
