Has anyone else noticed how dangerous these central hatchings zones have become?

1: Where drivers are turning right they won't cross them, so blocking the road & making them invisible to the cars further behind, hence lots of near rear end shunts. (my old driving instructor taught me to straddle the central white line to be clearly visible)

My brothers right turn accident & my mate's near death rear end shunt will testify to this exact problem

2: They decrease forward visibility where the road curves left. I know of one locally where there is a farm exit on an NSL, it has reduced the visibilty by 100m at least. Should I point this out to highways dept?

3: Drivers won't cross the lines when passing cyclists, despite there being a 4ft wide gap for them use.

3: Most drivers assume you can't overtake on them - Stonehenge A303 for example. Does this highlight just how few people really know the rules of the road?

There's more stupidity too in the number of left filter lanes that have been hatched out. This is particularly idiotic on roads subject to NSL where previously the filter lane allowed turning traffic to move out of the main stream before slowing, but now brakes hard to execute a 90 degree turn.

I have never found anyone who can explain the rationale behind this ... apart from the possibiliity of backhanders from road paint suppliers and to provide work for contractors .

The other thing is that when I was trained it really was hammered home that councils did not spend money without just cause. Therefore if one saw lots of white paint, signs, chevrons then the simplest observational link was "hmm might be something a bit iffy."

In a similar fashion it used to be possible to use the white lines in a sensible fashion, ie short dots in a clear section, long dashed short gaps in a more tricky section and so on. Now it seems everywhere I drive has what I always knew as hazard lines.

Now the possibility to use these clear messages has irretrievably been degraded in my opinion.

I agree. Road markings in general are nolonger being used as descriptive of the road hazards but as weapons in the "anti speed" Nazi's campaign of terror.

Mind you it is probably just as likely that the people who are deciding in the markings no as little about what they mean as your average driver (IE not alot).
