There are loads of these signs in laybys in Cornwall and Devon. They are to stop surf-tramps like myself from sleeping in their car instead of payign for Mrs Miggins B+B..

What's the legal situation with these signs. If they are in laybys by the side of the road, which you can park in all day are these just signs to scare you ? Do they have any legal basis ? If I've paid my road tax am I no entitled to park in a layby by the side of the road ?

You will probably find that the Council have taken out a Byelaw to prohibit overnight parking at beauty spots, lay bys etc, hence the signs.

The old North Riding of Yorkshire (tip your cap Fif)did this and as far as I am aware they still in existence. Lawful if signed.

Yep the parking Stazi Strike again

I had same problem with my VW Sleepswagon.

Just move to Euroland, they have campervan park ups everywhere, in fact they are encouraged, they bring lots more tourists to the area especially those of a sporting nature.

What really gets me is whats wrong with staying over offseason, nothing is open anyway so who cares?, let those who want to enjoy the outdoors do so. Nothing is provided by these stazi councils for the likes of us anyway, even if we did want to park somewhere proper.

By the way: Mr Average Surfer is 30 something, a mid to high earner with lots of spare cash, making the most of his free time. Their overnight wagons are often expensive 3rd vehicles too. I know there are bad apples too but they are the minority.

You could always go to one of those expensively setup travellers sites with all mod-cons.

Oh sorry, the travellers have already been and gone like a cloud of locusts

Non PC footnote: travellers = gippos!

What sites are those? The responsibility to provide sites for travellers was removed by your last beloved tory government...

Not sure where you surf but in Devon and Cornwall the "Mr Average Surfer" you have defined is definately in a minority (mores the pity).
The signs are there for a good reason - to stop scabbers from setting up camp there instead of paying for a camp site. The genuine surfers (of all ages) are not a problem as they tend to have a healthy respect for the environment and the locality.

I am 30 and these days stay in B+Bs, Hotels or campsites ( in the summer ).

I just wondered what the legality behind these signs are ? ( as there was one on the Croyde webcam today ). What could they actually do you for ? Would it be the police enforcing the bye law or a council representative ? Would they have to go and get a court order etc ?

I used to do it when I was young and had no cash.

I would'nt mind if the local councils provided sufficient camping spaces for the demand at peak times. Knowing Croyde they have a limited time of opening & no's of campers allowed etc.

Most of the campsites b&b's are closed this time of year, yet how many people will be in the water this time of year - hundreds on the weekends even now. It's now a huge sport.

Have you seen the no of provisions made for for proper campervans in France?, they have elec hookups on parking meters, toilets, almost everywhere popular.

Try finding a B&B anywhere near a beach at peak times, unless yuu want to buy the place!.

They are parking restrictions, enforceable in the usual way. Worth getting a copy of the local laws to see what is actually prohibited. Some ban parking completely between set periods, others ban "overnight" parking, a term so vague as to be almost unenforceable, if you bother disputing any tickets arguing what is overnight, as opposed to part of a night.

I used to kip all over the place in my camper van.
Never got bothered by anyone, although I used to try and park a bit out of the way so as not to tempt fate.

Doesn't the rule depend on the definition of overnight?
If you arrive at 00:01, it's morning, and you can park where you like!
