Had a Marina Militare turn up yesterday that I bought to see if I liked the style of it's more prestigious counterpart...

Unfortunately (for my wallet) I quite like it! The strap is, understandably, cheap. But overall the size of the watch and style is great. Very comfortable on the wrist too. I was concerned it would be too big on my wrist after I had previously ruled out a 45mm PO as being too big.
Not sure I'll wear the MM that much as I can't get past the homage/copy issue. Worth a pop for what it cost though. I'm going to look for a used Toshi to put on there and see if that makes it feel a bit better.

What I don't get is how Panerai are able to make a monstrous fuss over the use of the 'branding' 'Marina Militare'.
It's Italian for 'Navy' - how the hell Panerai are allowed to claim that this is *their* brand is beyond me. Quite obviously the watch design is a complete rip-off of Panerai's distinctive design, and I'd have thought it was *this* that Panerai could justifiably come down on, patent and design-wise. But 'Marina Militare' ???? Hell, that's like a watch company trying to claim 'Air Force' as their trademark. Presumably the Italian Navy are in bed with Panerai and don't mind?
Who knows. But interesting that you think they wear well even given their extreme size... I've always avoided Panerai purely because they're big and noticeable and too 'in your face' for me (even though the Orange Monster in my collection isn't exactly subtle), but if their watches actually wear reasonably well given the size... may have to try one some time.
As far as you're concerned - now just get saving up for a real one. Or, even better, an Anonimo

With regard to the wearing well for it's size, it's a 44mm, I think it helps that the shape is fairly square. It makes it seem smaller than it is? Also, it is quite thick, not one to just slip under a jumper or shirt. It's Italian for 'Navy' - how the hell Panerai are allowed to claim that this is *their* brand is beyond me. I'm not sure if I would ever buy the real deal as it were. Whilst I am sure many find them a joy to own. I think I'd struggle paying so much for something like it. It's a bit... dull

Funny you mention Anonimo though, I've taken a shine to the Pollus and D Date models.

It's a Panerai trade mark. Why shouldn't they make a fuss?cyberface said:

Not 100% sure, but I think the Italian Navy allowed Panerai to trade mark it because Panerai made their watches.fivesixseven8 said:

Stick a Toshi on it. You won't regret it and you can keep the strap for when you 'Upgrade'
I'm not sure about spending more on the strap than the watch itself! Let's see if it will keep working for a week first eh?If you're trying it out to see if you like it then budget obviously isn't an issue, so could you not have bought used and genuine? Then if you decided it wasn't for you, you could have flipped it for not much of a loss.
