Posted to General Gassing as few people seem to read the Audi section :-)

Anybody know of how the Audi 4.2 V8 (on S4s around 2004) deals with higher miles e.g. 60K+

Cheers

This is not an answer , but I wouldnt consider 60K high for any car (ok maybe a race spec or ultra high performance) but not for a 4.2 audi.

Thats true , 60k in 6 years = 10,000 pa not much

High miles would be 100,000 +

Very well indeed.

Mine has done 40k miles, which is very low ('54 plate). The majority have done many miles.

Oh, and this is getting moved to the Audi forum. Strangely enough. Odd, I know.

PS: Cracking car!

What are the key differences tech between the S4 and RS4, I know the bhp and torque figures differ what about the suspension and brakes. Are the dampers bespoke?

The engine will just be run in at 60k! Very good engines, just make sure it has been looked after and don't be afraid to ensure you look after it, I think it's belts will need changing between 70k - 80k. Just had them done on my 2.4 V6 by specialist a bit ahead of schedule to avoid untimely snappage!

I would buy on condition/service rather than miles.

OK - I agree that 60K is not high miles, but let me rephrase the question.

Is the 4.2 lump capable of high miles? Is there anything I should be looking for?

4.2 is very popular in Aus and the US - if taken care of it will go on and on and on and on and....

Managed to reply to your other thread but a 101k miler we sold recently needed only brakes and an auxilliary rad changing.

I have heard of but never seen timing chain wear (we sell and service a lot of these). The only real common faults are leaking auxilliary rads which sit behind each foglight, 300 odd will change the pair of the anyway.

Evidence of regular servicing and plugs at 60k. Good, strong cars.

Oft repeated advice: generally strong. Auxillary rads are susceptible to corrosion and weeping. Coil packs, tyres, brakes, oil are heavy consumables. Timing chain tends to grate for 2-3 seconds on start up - that's normal. Grating can be muted a bit by switching from the variable service intervals to an annual service regime.

If that timing chain noise on start up is any longer than 1 or 2 secs then dont buy it, chain/tensioner replacement is an engine out job, and having seen one done, and then have the noise again a few months later, its not somthing you want to get into. But as above 1 or 2 secs, nothing to worry about.

The Aux rads are very common, every other S4 I've seen has need one if not two. Easy to check with a torch and knock the price down.

Coil packs go from time to time, sometimes pops the ECU fuse and you then need recovery, but normally just a mistfire until replaced. Would be nice to fit a set when one goes, but not cost effective for warranty £25 each or so, so not bad.

Oil consumption is high.

Other than that, not to much to worry about.

Mine is about to pass 90k, the engine is still spot on. it's had the start up rattle (lasts about 0.5-1 second) since I bought it at 60k and it hasn't got any worse. Also uses abot 1L of oil per 2k miles.

Aux rads can be given some preventetive maintainence by removing wet leaf build up regularly and using some sort of oil/grease to prevent corrosion. Mine are still fine.

Check that the seat motors work and check that it doesn't need new shocks.

I had an S4 on a 53 plate for 2.1/2 years. Got it with 60k on the clock. Maitenance bills as follows:

1 Engine - £10k
1 Clutch - £2k
Pads and Discs - £650
8 coil packs - £250
8 tyres - £700
1 service - £450

I was lucky that the engine was replaced under waranty, but it gives you an idea how expensive this car can be to repair when things go wrong.

What was the cause of the engine failure?

I had the car 1 month when the engine management light came on and the car made an intermittent clattering noise on start up. It also developed a fault similar to a coil pack failure, but the RAC hooked their software up and couldn't find a faulty coil. The car was then taken to an Audi garage where it spent 1 month with a master technician, an expert from Audi (don't know if he came in from Germany) and an expert from the warranty company looking at it. They couldn't figure it out so replaced the engine. The warranty company really didn't want to replace it, which is why it spent a month in the garage.

On a side note, something I didn't realise about warranties, they normally limit claims upto £5k unless you get a decent one from a main dealer.

You could replace 'S4' with the name of any modern car though. If something major goes wrong then it's gonna cost you (or the warranty company) big bucks.
