Before you all shout 'sacrilege', let me explain...

My XJ8 is missing one of the air vents in the back - the ones that sit between the front seats and also house the extra cigar lighter.

I bought new ones from Jaguar, but it's a complete unit that replaces the old one. That's fine, except that I need to remove the small piece of wood trim from my old one and re-attach it to the new one - so if anyone knows how to do this without causing damage, I'd be very grateful!

I know all of the wood trim around the dash vents simply pop off with a little leverage from behind. There is a clip in each corner. Then they just push back on. I assume it'd be the same for that one too

The trim is usually secured by tangs on the back of the trim that mate with spring clips fixed in the item it's fixed to. The safest way to remove trim without damage is to work a couple of lengths of string behind the trim piece and gently pull it away. Anything else - like a screwdriver or knife - runs the risk of damage if you try to lever it off.
