Hello, not sure if I'm in the right place here but am hoping some of you model-minded folk might be able to help.
My sons have just started to get into Warhammer, along with some of their friends. Very early days so far - they each have a small box or two of figures and are spending a lot of time and taking great care painting them .... but the day will soon come (this weekend I reckon) when they will ask about getting a game board.
So, what are the best websites for getting ideas on how to make our own gameboards and are there any definite do's or do nots when making a board. Also, are there any good websites/forums that any of you would recommend, that will make sense to a mother smile
Thank you !

For all your warhammer needs:

http://www.warseer.com/forums/

there is a section for modelling in there, and i'm pretty sure there are posts on making boards.

But to start off with a dining room table with a covering of some sort and some books for hills is just as good a place to start.

GW do do their own board but it is stupidly expensive. I'm sure others will be along shortly with ideas etc as well.

Not that i know anything about GW/Warhammer etc *cough*

I built a board for a model railway - thought it would be fun to build a layout with the kids - turned out they just were not interested in model railways!

It has now been converted to Warhammer - combination of sand, PVA and poster paint to give it texture and colour, plus some paper-mache hills etc.

To be honest though, I would not worry too much about the board - wait until they are collecting their third army each after going through 40K, fantasy and Lord of the Rings...

Wallpaper tables...

The cheap folding ones from B&Q etc are utterly perfect. They are the right height to sit at or stand next etc. We used to have two of them, used either one at a time or together (depending on the layout we needed).

Put a tablecloth or some green (or tan) material over the top, books and other objects can stack underneath for hills etc.

They also fold conveniently out of the way when not needed biggrin

Just go to B&Q and buy a big sheet of MDF for a few quid.

Then just let the kids let rip and have fun with paper-mache, chicken wire, PVA glue, sand, cardboard and some paint.

No advice, but I must congratulate you on being a very cool mum. I cannot imagine my own mum having taken an interest in something like that when I was a kid. Fair play to you bow

Slightly off topic - there are some great books set in the Warhammer universe. Amazon has a great selection if you're looking fro stocking fillers.

Has pontential, but then you have a fixed playing area instead of a variable one.

The games workshop magazine, I'm reliably informed used to recommend building hills out of contour pieces of card with the width of each step being big enough to take a base.

so cut out and stack sheets of card cover with papermache and paint, then make up sections of river cutting card so you can snake it across the battle field, buildings can be bluepeter ish just look in the rules for any sizes and armaments.

OOPS possibly shown I actually used to play this stuff but at epic scale

The thing is it's easy to modify, we used to add hill, cut ravines, insert trees and buildings all the time as kids.

Just rebuild and repaint cheaply and easily.

The main thing is to encourage them. Model making, of whatever persuasion, is great fun and often leads to other related interests.

yes I'm very happy that they're showing an interest in this and Airfix. Luckily their Dad is a big kid too so I'm hoping it will last.

Hello,

Will happily hold my hand up and say that I am one of those who play and enjoy all things Warhammer.

First thing I would recommend is find a good friendly local model shop, whilst Games Workshop is good for the actual product they are on the more expensive side of things.

Secondly see if there is a gaming club in your area - go to http://www.gcnm.org.uk/ to find your nearest Gaming Club Network member club, not all clubs are members of the GCN however I would recommend that you go for one that is. This is primarily because GCN member clubs are all required to meet the appropriate CRB checks etc before admittance to the GCN.

Do NOT be worried if they start jabbering on about Daemons and Vapires etc... Warhammer includes a broad spectrum of backgrounds and storylines - some of which are not that nice and fluffy.

You will find that the average gamer will often become an avid reader and normally a dab hand a mental arithmatics- even if only to prove how much you kicked the other guys butt by!!!

As mentioned previously Warseer is a good source of knowledge- although some is aimed at the more experienced gamer. I am regular visitor to www.warhammer.org.uk and www.belloflostsouls.net

As for a games table - 6x4 is the best size, and harsh as it seems do not invest in the high quality scenery etc to begin with, after the better part of 15 years I still destroy at least one building every 2 or 3 months!!!

My "everyday" table is 2 pieces of 3ft x 2ft MDF painted green, then some pva dabbed strategically on it, the green flock sprinkled on to create grass. Hills and buildings are then placed to meet the need of the game.

Warhammer or Warhammer 40,000?

If it's the latter I have boxes and boxes of stuff in my mum's loft from when I used to play, including quite a bit of scenery, which I'd be happy to let go for bargain prices to a fellow PHer. I also have a large stack of old white dwarf magazines which are his if someone can come and collect them.

She lives just outside Northampton, so probably not far from you. Drop me an email if you are interested and I'll let you know next time I'm up that way.
