OBDII Scan tool problems

I have a problem with the car when idling. Whenever it reaches 85degrees the revs hunt between 800-1200rpm. Common problem so I checked the usual - idle control valve working, changed TPS, still no luck..

I've tried to use two scantools to read the fault codes, O2 sensors reading, etc. including an ElmScan 5. Hopefully this will give me an indication of what the problem is. But I can't seem to get the car to work with the scan tools. Is there a diagnostic mode you need to put the car into to make it respond??

Car is a 2001 elise MKII.

My OBD reader works fine on Elises. I've used it on both my 2004 VVC and an early 120bhp car.
