XBOX 360 problems

My sons nearly 18 month old hardly used XBOX 360 has given up on him, apparently according to people with similar problems its overheating 2 red lights coming on then after 5-10 mins the unit shuts down leaving a blank screen on the TV.
I have had the thing in bits, its spotless in there could not see any dust as like i said hardly used and kept in a spare room, however still decided to blow what dust there was out via an airline,then put back together, same thing happening. Looks like a hardware problem.
So looking on various web sites about problems with Xboxes there seems to be a huge amount, they are not cheap and looks as if most of the problems are pretty common ones ie manufacturing faults. No wonder Bill Gates is so bloody rich a lot of money for something pretty unreliable.
So my next question is are PS3`s as unreliable? Or are they much more reliable?
As i dont think i will be getting him an Xbox again for the time being.

If it has a red-light issue, then you can return it to Microsoft for replacement. So now you have nothing unfortunately, just a dead box that MS won't touch. You will have broken the seal when you took it apart.PS3 failure rate is high (YLOD), but not as high as Xbox (RROD).

it depends on the red lights, ive had the RROD before (after 11months) and had it repaired under warranty, that unit then failed again 8 months later and thought it would be covered by the 3 year warranty which they had not long announced.however was told by the woman on the phone at MS that the 3 year warranty only applies to a particular Red light config (top right, and bottom two lights on?) .. mine failed with different red lights on (maybe 2 lights? - i cant remember) and was told that the lights on in my case indicate a different hardware fault and so I had to pay £60 for MS to fix it.. despite it being only 8months since last repaired.
to the OP, the PS3 has less issues as far as im aware, im loving my slim. its so damn quiet too..!

There would have been a warranty and you would have got it repaired for free, but you did this.....

For what it's worth, I believe one fo the main issues on overheating was poor contact between the heatsink and the chips. Some people have done repairs by remiving the heatsinks, cleaning off the old heat sink compound and putiing it back together with new heat sink compound. Worth a go snce you've already opened it up.

Was just about to mention this.I was looking on ebay recently at the dead consoles, considering buying one to fix.
Found this, if you need some help in removing the HSFs.
In the end, I didn't buy a dead unit off ebay, because it seems that theres quite a few RROD problems, and not all of them are related to overheating, so I couldn't guarantee that I'd get one that could be fixed by extra cooling.
So I'm getting a brand new one for Christmas just for Forza 3,
I had already contacted Microsoft. I was told that there was no warranty as not only was the unit 18 months old, but also when i explained what was happening with the system and the lights etc, they said they can repair it, but i would have to fork out of my own pocket for repairs.

It's actually 3 years - sometimes the drones on the CS line either don't know that, or [cynic]try it on[/cynic]. Hench i thought i would have a go myself.
The lights thing does ring a bell though - my DVD drive failed on my original one and they wouldn't do that under warranty, just the 3 red lights fault. So someone suggested I wrap it in a towel
Luckily mine failed the right way round! about 2 years into the warranty, the GFX chip failed (blocky graphics and crazy colours for a while, then a blank screen, but you could still play the game!) then about a mth out of the 3 year warranty I got 3 red lights the other week, so luckily its covered again!
I hope its enjoying its holiday in Germany, seems to enjoy going there!

I've heard its a problem with the clamps for the heatsink? Google x clamps mod or something like that? The X clamp mod involves taking off the original x clamps that hold on the heat sinks and replacing them with bolts. This allows less 'flex' in the motherboard and combined with adding some new thermal paste onto the chips could well fix a broken xbox.
I did this with my broken xbox and it fixed it for maybe a month, tried it again but no joy, although some people have fixed them and gone on to have no problems.
At the moment I'm running one with the x clamps removed, the fan running faster and a bridge of copper between the two heat sinks to share the heat between them. Barely gets hot now but no idea how long it'll last for!

Mine is a strange unit...sometimes it comes up 3 red lights (2 bottoms & top left) on start up. I turn it off, wiggle the wire into the power pack as suggested on the xbox site once or twice & bingo...so far it works fine. I think the older power packs had issues too & I see that mine is the older one with the slightly higher amp rating.
