Was watching the telly the other night when the new Caine film was advertised, gather it's pretty good and intend to see it. But it reminded me of something I've been pondering for a while. Has there been a recent surge in well made vigilante-esque movies? And if yes do you think this perhaps reflects an undercurrent of the mood in society today?

Two of my top films at the mo are Death Sentence and Outlaw. Okay, there have always been "pop" action movies with the likes of mssrs seagal or van-damme following a well-trodden plot, and while there's nothing wrong if you take them for what they are, the more recent movies I mention just seem of a much higher calibre. These are moving, excellently done films about ordinary people who get pissed off, and while this is nothing new- Taxi Driver, Falling Down etc it does seem to me there's a surge of them of late.
