I'm looking at selling my 911, had it about 18 months and fancy a change. I've thought about an R8, 911 Turbo, 360 Challenge Stradale and none of them are right. Anyway, I'm now considering a 360 Spider or a 430 spider. I know it's an odd time to buy a convertible but the coupe looks do absolutely nothing for me.

The 458 is out next year, although I'm not sure when, I'm worried that will severely affect 430 prices, any opinions?
So what I'm wondering is which car would be cheaper to run over the next 3 or 4 months? Obviously the 430 will cost more but If it will hold it's value better then it might work out cheaper in the long run. It would be using the car on a daily basis, although I'll have access to another car if the weather gets bad.

Anyway, I was hoping someone could answer the following questions for me:
Is there any real difference in running cost between the 360 Spider and 430 spider?
I would imagine the 430 is the better car, but is it really 20-30k better?
How do they drive? I find my 355 very easy to drive so I'm guessing they are even easier?
What's the handling like in both cars?
I there any room behind the seats to put an over night bag etc?

Thanks for your help.

The handling on the 430 is leagues ahead of the 360. It really is night and day as the 430 has the all important E-diff. It is a much more planted car and the manettino on the steering wheel gives access to a greater range of driver involvement modes. There is a significant power improvement in the 430 with better torque as well. Another benefit is that the engine in the 430 has a timing chain so no more costly 3 year belt services.

The seats are far better in the 430 IMHO and are comfortable over long distances. The front boot is cavernous and much larger than the one you'll find in a 997 so no worries on luggage space. Depending upon how tall you or your passenger are it is also possible to fit soft bags behind the seats. It makes a fantastic long distance touring car for trips across Europe.

My advice would be to bypass the 360 and go straight for a 430 if the budget allows.

As for the arrival of the 458 I think the effect on 430 prices will be less than anticipated as there are very limited numbers of the new car destined for the UK next year. The first cars won't arrive until the summer and 430 values may even rally later in the year IMHO as potential 458 buyers realise they are in for a long wait for a car. Factor in that the 458 spider won't be here until later in 2011 and that should help 430 spider values further.

The 430 is undoubtably a more powerful and more technically advanced car, but it doesnt make the 360 a bad option. Try them both out and judge whether the 430 is worth the extra cash. On the track it probably is.

Wasn't the question which will be cheaper not which is the better car. The answer is surely whichever you can buy best. Potentially the 360 has to be a safer bet due to smaller outlay. But if anyone knew the answer I suppose they'd be selling these things for a living.
One's thing is for sure you will lose on either but at least you'll have a smile on your face in the process.

360 is cheaper to start with, so if they both loose the same % your money is safer in the 360 than the 430, just simple maths.

As for the comments above, I think the 'turn a knob to select driver involvement' says it all to me about the 430, having owned lots of Ferrari's over the years (and yes I've done 2k miles in 5 days in a 430) I've just bought a manual 360 again which gets lots of use. The 430 is faster ultimately, but the e-diff and the fact you'll find manual ones are very rare so near 90% of Spiders are F1 the whole driving experience not a tactile (faster but not as tactile). I also love the fact on the road I can stretch the car more, feel the limits and listen to the engine work, when I did this in a 430, I was going much much to quickly to safe or sane.

Bit like when the 996 Turbo came out, stunning car, blisteringly but not one of the most tactile driving experience.

Main thing is get a good few hours in both and decide from there, but having run a 360 through a winter, don't take it out when there is salt on the road, one drive is all it take to permanently take the gloss of lots of the detail bits!

Is it really that delicate a car that you can't take it out when the there's salt on the road?
What bit's exactly will be affected? I just assumed as long as you got the car detailed before winter and got a good few layers of good wax on then it would be ok?

Thanks so far for everyone's help

360 is far, far prettier and less likely lose as much cash as the 430 as the 430 has further to drop.

There are lots of alloy bits on the car including suspension and lots on the engine etc plus a load of the small brackets in the engine bay etc are not finished that well with black satin paint. The bodywork itself will hold up OK.

It's not a real issue but the car will always look clearly rougher than a car that spends salty days in bed.

I would go for the F430 spyder.. definitly worth the extra money and obviously better in all departments... has a fabulous engine which sounds like no other car I've been in... recently purchased an F430 spyder myself an can testify after owning lambos and a porsche 997 turbo before the spyder.. this car is in a differant league... the buzz and sound are amazing.. if your want a pure drivers car which brings a smile to your face every time you drive it.. this is it!

The 430 is so far ahead of the 360 in many areas. The biggest is the feeling of quality and reliability. Buying a 430 after 07, gives you a 4 year manufacturer's warranty which I think is unbelievable for a supercar. The cabin, gearbox, sound, fit and finish is leaps ahead. I find sitting in a 360 a little dated and fragile. This is to be expected against the later 430 model with all the money and extra F1 technology going into the development.

Tried a 430 triptronic, hated it, especially the gearbox very jerky. Now have a 911 turbo S tripronic much better car.

F430 with F1 box is far superior to porsche tiptronics.. The F1 box is made for a sporty drive with numerous other driving options if desired even track! You might find the Porsche's gearbox is basad around an auto box which is slightly boring... The new PDK box is step forward from the old tiptronics..
