Does anyone have internal shutters on their windows?

We have had a visit tonight (we planned it!) from a shutter salesman as we like the idea of shutters for the front of the house. We look onto the rest of the street - so would be nice to have some privacy. We like the idea of the split shutters so we can keep the louvers on the top open to let in the light, and the bottoms closed for privacy. Obviously at night we can shut all of them.

The negatives I can see are:-

1) It may feel like being in a prison - with the frames and shutter being closed the majority of the time.

2) We have a square bay window, so we would never be able to have all of the shutters completely open. Effectively the two main window shutters would fold back over the two side windows.

Just wondered what others perspective on these may be on the prison scenario? Perhaps someone even has a square bay window that they have shuttered?

We are beginning to think that although we like the idea of shutters, perhaps they are not the best fit for our house. i.e. if they could all fold back flush against the wall then we think they would be perfect, but in our house there are some strange shape windows so the shutters when opened will not be flush against the wall they will effectively be like a window opening internally.

Then again - how often would we open the shutters, rather than just opening the louvers? I need to get in someones house with shutters to see what it feels like and how often they actually open them!!

Any feedback most welcome.

Would the wide-type wooden venetion blinds not be a more suitable option?

That is the other option, but also has it's draw backs!

1) On the square bay window we would need 4 separate blinds, and would be scruffy as we would never get all 4 in the same open position

2) The window is quite deep so when blinds are pulled up there will be a large "gather" at the top of the window. Again would look scruffy and block the window with the "gather".

3) You cannot open half the blinds (top) and leave half closed (bottom) like you can with shutters. We like the concept of the light still coming in at top and privacy of the bottom.

I think what I am saying is we know what we will gain and lose with blinds, but we are not sure of what to expect with shutters, hence looking for opinions and examples to see. Worryingly we cannot see any examples of box windows with shutters on web, so beginning to make us think it may not work!

Fats, is this any good? Plantation - Cafe style

Never used them; just found whilst looking for shutters for our place.

Just had these fitted this week. We used Sam @ opennshut www.opennshut.co.uk who specialises in supplying for DIY fitment, but we took the easy option and got him to measure and fit as well.

Very pleased and highly reccommended.

We think they are ideal for releasing the extra space offered by a bay window, and much prefer the appearance/maintenance/durability to venetian blinds.

Another one for open & shut, we had cafe style (half height) shutter for our terrace front window and they worked a treat, and well worth it to give a decent amount of privacy with a bit of style. They were a much better alternative to net curtains, and much tidier than venetian blinds. I guess they did keep some light out, but not noticeably, and they are easy to adjust to let light in, and how much you can see out and people can see in.

I measured up carefully, they were delivered and I put them up in about 40 mins.

I'm now considering them for our new house, which has a bay at the front and the upstairs windows too. Open & Shut were great - they were very proactive and checked we were ok every step of the way. Would recommend them.

yes

...given that it took Sam a couple of hours to measure, and then 8am-6.30pm to fit our 2 bays plus one other window, I'm pleased I didnt go the DIY route!!! Might do for some other windows though...

WWesty - the difference is that you have a traditional bay window, we have a square bay.

Would you mind posting a photo of them opened?

We have gone for each window having a separate section, hinged to open....obviously not practical if you want to leave open, but we don't - just need access to open windows. We are happy to just leave the louvres open since this lets in plenty of light whilst retaining some privacy - its the front of the house.

Will try and get a pic in daylight (at the weekend!).
