Hi Guys
Just wanted to give you some advice. I have had to do large repairs to the rear arches of an early E46 M3 this week. The car is quite high milage but none the less the arches had rotted from inside out.
Now underneath the arch there are 3 acess plugs on the inner arch I removed these on this car and they were not coated with anything inside (a light primer that was it) What I recommend (if you havent already) is to clean off the arches underneath, remove the plugs and spray as much cavity wax into this area as you can. This should hold off any problems like this car had.
This area of the car is just a small cavity that holds damp and requires a coating
If its too late then give me a ring.

Did you take any pictures of how bad the arches had got?
When I first got mine, I was quite surprised how much of a mud trap the relatively large inner arch lip was. I was able to dig handfuls of crap out by running my fingers along inside the arch. I'll have a look for the plus you mention next time its up in the air.
Just to ensure that nobody does a silly, the OP is NOT suggesting filling your arches with expanding foam
