Now there's a 75th year it's been in the hands of Labour. Lucky them.

SNP reduced the Labour majority but couldn't winkle winky out.

Some thought the BNP would do better than they did, in 4th place.

Yep, the BBC this morning were banging on about how big a win it was for Labour, erm it wasn't really was it, they had a huge majority before going into that one.

I think now is the time to grant Scotland it's independance.Glaswegians must be blinkered, or are they really milking the benefits system for all it's worth and their vote is a result of this bribery

There are sheep who would vote for the same party even if that party murdered their entire family. No amount of good policies by other parties will change this.

33% turnout. Can't beat a bit of apathy.

The dynamics in Scotland are now very different to England. This was as much a protest vote against the SNP (who are in power there) as a vote FOR Labour.

I agree with that and it's worth noting also that it's a very depressed area where there'll never be anything BUT a Labour vote. Non-news story really, the Conservatives would do nothing for an area like this.

And yet again another MP who has never had a real job. At least he is from the area and wasn't some prat brought in from central office to get a job on the gravy train. With such a safe seat I thought they might of brought in mandy to get him elected so he could be PM after winky steps aside.

It's independence btw. Please don't confuse Glasgow North East with the whole of Glasgow. Whilst generalising a bit, the North and East of Glasgow are generally the less desirable parts of the city. As such, is the natural breeding ground for Labour.

Remember, during his considerable time as MP for the area, Michael Martin managed to keep the region as one of the worst in Western Europe for a variety of statistics (life expectancy, heart disease, etc., etc.). Despite Labour's ineptitude in looking after this constituency, it still has enough milking the benefits system who'll want to keep it that way, lifetime Labour voters and 'anything but the Tories' voters to ensure they have a safe majority.

  • When I said 'less desirable', I really meant to say 'The place is a st hole'.

Which is to my mind a far far bigger issue then who they vote for as the man in the street really does think they are all as bad as each other so feels they have no one to vote for.

Notice it's a lead item on the BBC, complete with pic of victorious MP (now preparing his nose for the trough - no wonder he's happy).

This is a resounding victory for Gordon Brown and Labour.

No, it's a vote for the mindless "I'm a labour man cos my dad voted Labour" thinking that's so prevalent in Glasgow's East end.

Did the voters stroked their chins thoughtfully whilst mulling over the economic arguments from all parties?

Or plumped for ongoing benefits, union support and public sector expansion at the expense of the posh Tory taxpayers?

Note also it's Broon's "efforts" to secure our economic recovery.

Shame that word wasn't "achievements" isn't it?

Indeed. Voter apathy showing that the public are really turned off by politics at the moment. Was good to see that this didn't mean the BNP gained ground though as they lost their deposit.

I think the general election should get more voters out but the main parties need to start differentiating themselves from each other and re-engaging with voters.

Given the demographic and voting history of that area, it's not supprising that the party who ensure the "Rab C Nesbitt's" can afford Sky TV and Buckfast tonic were re-elected.

I guess it will give justification to people blamming the Scots for winky/blair and the mess this countrys in

so a labour majority of over 10000, now reduced to 8000, is a victory? OK they hold the seat but reduced and ONLY 33% voted. Another seat with a fixed majority by bending the boundaries?

Why is it that people who live in poor deprived areas vote labour, but never end up seeing their local areas improve?
