Hi to you all.
I feel I must comment on the way my wife's Mk4 Golf is put together.
I am changing the timing belt at the moment and I am simply amazed at how clever the power steering pump tensioning mechanism works, using a simple rack and pinion system with a locking bolt. Why can't all cars be made this way?

And then the plastic clip that holds the window glass up breaks letting the glass fall into the door bottom and smash into a million pieces frown

I haven't had that problem yet!! We've only just bought the car and not used it yet!!
My brother in law had an S reg Diesel Passat which had gone round the clock twice and never gave him any problems, but now has a 5-Series on an 02 plate which gives him constant problems. He always says how well built the VW was.

Damm you, I'd managed to put that little issue to the back of my mind after it happened to my A3, but fortunately the glass didn't break but the window motor decided to die when I tried to put the window up! So the poxy little £2 clip ended up costing me £360!!!

Then there's the quality plastic water pump that destroys itself gradually!

Why oh why don't I just buy Jap cars!?!

Everything about the Golf is ridiculously over engineered for the task its supposed to do. The door handles are a triumph of out of control design for the sake of it. Not to mention the bolt on door skins with 3 different size bolts holding them on, the door trim with its retaining clips that literally explode when removing them. Err note to Volkswagen, get your designers some pussy as they obviously are taking out their frustrations on life in designing some truely hateful mechanisms.

I'm not in a position to change at the moment but my mk4 Golf will be my last VAG product for a long time.
