It's currently 8:40 on Friday evening. It's cold, it's raining, and it's seriously windy, and the doorbell just rang.
I open the door to find our builder (currently doing our loft conversion) saying "didn't want to worry you with the noise, but I'm just going back up to check that everything is good and secure, given the weather forecast".
How outstanding is that?

Maybe he needs to check everything is secure because he doesn't have a professional indemnity insurance policy?
You did ask to see a copy of his policy before he started, didn't you?
Some people just can't help being cynical, can they. You did ask to see a copy of his policy before he started, didn't you?

options I can come up with are:
He is at an awkward stage where the wind could cause trouble.
He has no confidence in the work he has done so far.
He left something behind.
He really does care and wants to ensure things go well.
He's so busy if anything happens he doesn't have time to fix it before doing the next job.

I'm going for option 4. He is at an awkward stage where the wind could cause trouble.
He has no confidence in the work he has done so far.
He left something behind.

He wasn't checking the actual building work - that's external structure is basically complete. He was checking the sheeting/netting stuff on the scaffolding.
We're using him because he did a great job on a friend's loft conversion, and our neighbours have now signed him up having seen what he's done for us so far.
He's a guy making a bloody good living, all working within a mile or so of home. Why wouldn't he want to put up good customer service when he's getting that much out of it?
