Prompted by a friend who is planning to buy a V12 as a second car (he's been after one since he read that the V12 configuration is inherently excellently balanced - see http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Engine_balance ) we had a wander through the classifieds this evening.

The criteria:
  • v12
  • hard-top
  • that's it

We came up with a couple of likely contenders; this:

The mileage may or may not be for real, but either way... just lovely smile

The seats on the Merc look like they've done more miles.

Why not go for a straight 6? Just as well balanced as a V12. Possible more so depending on the configuration of the V12.

We've just driven home in our R129 Merc, not a V12 600 but a straight 6 280, lovely machine, hewn from a solid lump of granite.

You're right, on the balancing front. But then it wouldn't be a V12 smile

I'm also a big V12 fan, although I've never owned one. The gaps in my motoring engines are V10, V12, inline-5 (although crossplane-V8 is a possibility as I've only had a flat-plane V8). And V-twin and V4 but that's taking the piss a bit. Some reasonably affordable V12 examples:

E38 BMW 750il would be my choice. Bomb proof car very reliable engine and James Bond had one.... £6-8k will get a great one, I would love one but cant stomach 20 MPG at the very best.

And look at the price! So long as you are towing a supertanker (the "High Efficiency" version of this engine does 12mpg I think) you are quids in.

The drivers seat on that SL looks like it has easily done 3 or 4 times the stated mileage.

I think an e32 750i would be my choice for 12 cylinder goodness. Being made basically out of two M20s with a common crank, it isn't too complicated.

Actually come to think of it, BMW V12s seem to be extremely reliable. It's the electrics that will get you on a E31, and maybe a E38

You're looking at V12's and dont have a Jaguar listed confused that's like looking at supercars and missing off Ferrari.

XJ12 or XJS smile
