wifes chariot,01 318i touring has a problem,a few weeks ago the remote entry stopped working,i thought it was the battery needed changing so for a few days we used the key, i then tried to lock(lucky enough) the car manually and the key just span around :-( i then reprogrammed the key hitting the button three times whilst the key was in the ignition, worked perfect but now the manual lock is still broken i rang my bmw dealer and got a new barrel from germany (£45)..........
are they easy to fit? what about air bag in drivers door?what tools do i need?is it easy?how long?

They are fairly easy to replace, the door panel doesnt need to come off...there is, just above the catch behind a small plastic cover a 4mm allen bolt.....undo this and the lock (with some wiggling) slide out. You will then need to swap over the painted cover from the old lock to the new won.

The bolt will undo but not come out fully.

the lock itself will come out from outside next to the handle as a complete unit

http://www.realoem.com/bmw/showparts.do?model=AX72...

In this pic the lock unit is no.9 and 11 together, the bolt holding it in is next to no.15.

the lock can be stubben to pull out but will wiggle with persistance.
