Gallardo Spyder V 430 Spyder
Discussion
This may have been asked before - but - which to go for ?
I want a black manual car - enquired about 430 Spyder at Maranello this week - 06 - 22,000 miles - £81,950 and then today at the MPH show came across a Gallardo Spyder with Mcgurk.com - again 22,000 miles - £79,950 and after having a close look at it, I was very impressed with "Audi-esque" build quality and feel it's worthy of serious consideration and feel my mind could easily be changed from the 430 !
I've had three Ferraris in the past and quite relish the thought of Lamborghini ownership to add to my list, and would welcome any thoughts people may have on the two cars.
I would guess Nov/Dec/Jan may be a good time to do a deal on a convertible Italian supercar !?
Additionally does anyone have experience of the two dealers mentioned?
Thanks in advance for any imput

I've driven a 430 spyder and had a ride in a Gallardo Spyder, while out on photoshoots.. I'd say that the Gallardo feels more savage, and a bit of a monster, while the f430 probably quicker, but with less drama (although it still has plenty of drama!)
In terms of looks, most think that the Gallardo is better looking. I certainly found it easier to get good photographs of than the 430..
I think that you're doing the right thing by getting a spyder - you probably won't notice the very small difference in performance on the road anyway and OMG, the sound from them both is amazing!

Have you driven either, if not, get yourself out there and do it, it'll probably help you decide? I haven't, but I'd go with a gallardo purely for the looks
I'm sure others will be along shortly who have a more informed decision. A nice decision to have to make though
Have driven a couple of 430 Spyders previously and was very impressed with the "driveabilty" and felt the advance on the 360 was as great as the difference between the 360 and the 355 ( I've owned both 355GTS and 360 Spyder before) but yet to drive a Gallardo (in any form) - hope to do this the week after next !

I've owned a Gallardo spyder and a 430 spider. Both very different as others have said and the choice (other than looks which are subjective) really comes down to your driving style and preferences. The Gallardo is an aural treat with that V10 screaming away behind you but it's handling isn't as delicate or sharp as the 430 as a result of the front differential. The Ferrari is almost scalpel sharp in terms of front wheel feedback to the Lambo and feels a lighter car. It also has a lot more cabin space and a very large front boot so is practical if you want to go on a trip with a passenger. The Lambo has very little storage space and loses the rear shelf behind the seats of the coupe as the bulkhead is moved forward to use that area to stow the roof. Both have very good roof mechanisms and are comfortable tourers.
The 430 counters the 4 wheel drive advantage of the Gallardo in the wet with it's switchable e-diff. I drove through some torrential rain in France in mine with literally a sea of standing water on the auto route and with the e-diff in low traction mode the car was brilliant.
I also found the 430 had far better visibilty and was therefore easier to park, judge width etc.

other than that i agree with pretty much your every word
( the sl is a different matter
) I went through the same thought process back in '07 and ended up getting a MY08 G spyder. Both are great cars, both great to drive hard on your favourite twisty roads. The Gallardo's steering does feel a little heavier and numbed by the 4wd gubbins compared to the Ferrari but the difference isn't significant enough to suggest a clear choice of which car. I preferred the looks of the Gallardo - fresher, cleaner, bolder where the Ferrari isn't bad but not a patch on the old 355. The Gallardo IMHO was far nicer inside (Ferrari felt a bit seventies with low square transmission tunnel and naff sat nav). V10 vs V8 was six of one half a dozen of the other, with the Lambo snatching it because it sounds wonderful even at low revs tootling around in traffic, and a feeling it could pull like a train from low revs. Storage space, good enough in the G, frankly who cares in a car like this (send luggage by DHL).
The Evo article Anjum mentioned is reproduced in Evo's "Lamborghini supercars" magbook, on sale now. They compared two manual cars rather than F1 vs e-gear. They came down narrowly in favour of the Lambo - due to styling, and they didn't like the Ferrai's steering (kick back).

After owning a gallardo and now a F430 spyder can honestly say if you want a pure drivers car which is a buzz everytime you drive it, the F430 wins hands down... Yes the Gallardo might have a few more creature comforts like the big screen satnav etc.. but the F430 has more focus on driving with the manettino settings on the steering wheel and push start buuton... I would say in the looks department they both look better than each other from certain angles! but from the rear I'm afraid the F430 beats the Gallardo easily especially when you see that engine through the glass lid... obviously this is all based on ownership and hours of drauling over two of the greatest cars ever made...
what ever car you decide to purchase you will not be dissapointed...

I owned a 2008 Gallardo Spyder for 3.5 weeks. Sold it at a loss of 30,000 pounds, or 65 pounds a mile. Why?
i. Heavy everything when driving the car, cumbersome, feels weighty.
ii. Zero luggage space (makes no difference right - well try an overnight stay somewhere).
iii. Your passenger needs to be 5 foot 5 or less.
iv. Everyone on the road thinks you're a t
t.
v. Turning circle of about half a mile. No big deal - until you try and get out of a junction, garage, u-turn etc. Trust me it becomes a massive pain very quickly
The good stuff? You can drop the rear window and listen to the soundtrack
Go for the F430 - at least most of these issues are addressed.

I'll need to tell my 5ft10 wife that those weekends away we did in the car, with luggage, indeed even with a few bottles of wine, were indeed figments of her imagination

Well I think one can forget the 'audie- type' build quality.
Im my G the quality was not that good and it had so many issues with reliablity, far worse than any F car I have owned. Be prepared for a spanking when you come to sell the lambo, as did I and many others- to few dealers controlling the market- have a ring round and see what adealer will offer you for your chosed lambo- you might have a shock!
Wonderful sound, with a nice if not very thirtsy V10! the steering is awful and it feels just 'heavy' Also lambo assist is hopeless, they came to mine on five occasions - three times with a low loader that would not take the car!
Safe bet is the 430, better for resale, more resolved and dare I say it 'reliable'

Thanks everyone - really appreciate the feedback and the photographs ( wonderful)
I managed to buy the EVO supercar magazine this afternoon so will read it this evening which may (or may not) help with a decision. I'm very interested in how comments vary from one post to the next as to one person finding a car to be the most wonderful thing they've ever owned to the next not being able to live with it at all ! I feel it may require more than a few brief test drives to decide which one to go with - or is there anything else super, spyderish,Italian(maybe) and mid engined that I should be considering instead ?!
