Police meet over driver's complaint

A complaint made by a motorist fined for speeding against the Chief Constable of North Wales Police will be heard at a committee meeting later.

Pensioner William Shaw became angry when Richard Brunstrom called a news conference to criticise him after he complained about a speeding conviction in July.

As a result, the 71-year-old retired bank manager from Llangollen wrote a detailed complaint against Mr Brunstrom to the North Wales Police Authority's professional standards committee, which will consider the matter at 1000 GMT.

Members will meet in private with neither the chief constable nor Mr Shaw present.

Speed camera

Mr Shaw lost his 50-year clean driving record when a speed camera in Flintshire caught him driving at 39mph in a 30mph zone last year.

In court, he claimed his prosecution was unfair and said North Wales Police had

Mr Shaw pleaded guilty in the hope magistrates would reject the case, but he was fined £60 with £30 costs and three penalty points.

Mr Brunstrom then called an unprecedented news conference to attack Mr Shaw.

Speaking at the time he said the pensioner had been "irresponsible" and was "misleading the public."

As a result, the 71-year-old wrote a letter to the professional standards committee to complain about Mr Brunstrom's actions.

The committee will also discuss complaints of bullying against the Deputy Chief Constable of North Wales Police by a number of female officers will be discussed by the police authority today.

Bill Brereton, who is currently on long term sick leave, is accused of being over-bearing by women who have worked with him.

"Williams Shaw said the chief constable was nasty and offensive to focus on him - but the force's professional standards committee decided on Wednesday not to hold a formal investigation. "

I haven't read the full story yet but the front page of the Daily Post today carried a small paragraph (saw it on the news-stand, I don't get the paper until this evening) which said that Brunstrom was going to "get a slapped wrist" or "a mild rebuke" or some such feeble wording.

The story was overshadowed yesterday by front page reports of allegations that Deputy Chief Constable Brereton bullied women staff. How convenient.

Perhaps they should leave Brereton alone until he is recovered from his recent problems.

BBC said that the committee will sit down with Brunstrom to detail how he should deal with such cases.

ie they've admitted he was wrong - but they won't tell him off.
