Hi All thinking about getting a Monaro will have about £11000 to spend so will looking for something within the next 5 months,
Having looked at the forum I have a concern the dreaded Piston Slap do all of these engines (LS1) have this problem or is it just your luck in getting one that does not suffer from this.

If I find a 50000 mile+ one and quiet on cold start and noise level remains the same after a run, does this mean that this engine is unlikely to suffer from this problem later on.

Any other notable issues and weakness's that are expensive and annoying to repair,

Any specialists in the Glasgow area

Sorry if these questions are previously answered else where

first of all welcome, i presume your in scotland? theres a few of us up here including me and monaro5.7 (si) in edinburgh.

i wouldnt worry to much about pistonslap it doesnt seem to effect the engines life in anyway (considering its not to bad) and on the ls1's it only seems to effect the pre 04 ones. none of which should be ours.

i dont think your engine will develop pistonslap, you either have it or you dont from new.

running costs blah blah as per expected 20 round town, 28+ on a run. heavy right foot low teens!

servicing is cheap, just tyres i find a regular expence.

your budget should get you a nice cv8

happy shopping!!!!

mobius, firstly hello. Secondly this forum is at times like the emporers new clothes. One has a problem then everyone has the problem. Look at warped brakes as an example of the hysteria that can crop up. People also forget these are pushrod engines and completely different to ohc's. Ignore the issue of pistonslap, its probably only a handful that seemed effected

The engine technology isn't that great. The mechanicals can go on for ever, but if you abuse the car, then they can break. Upside is that parts are cheap and plentiful (though may be in the US)

Cheers guys will see if I am working next Saturday If I can get away may take trip to Glasgow will be in touch If I can

Oh well fears are getting less, been looking theres a nice black one 3 miles from me an 05 6.0ltr VXR but a bit too steep at £15k
so a facelift 5.7 would probably be what I would be looking for, if I decide to go for one.

I know all cars have weak spots but if slapping live-able with will just be a chatracteristic of engine, but why are some replaced/ rebuit under warranty if you can live with it??

Some owners will be such a PITA that it's not worth Vauxhall argueing the case. wink

It's been said on other threads that early Sierra Cosworths used to suffer from slap when cold (without the engine suffering). The Gudgeon pin was moved to cure it on later engines.

Just treat the engines with a bit of mechanical sympathy when cold, and they will be fine. The engines are big, and according to my gauges ours take about 15 miles to get the oil up to temperature.

6.0 ltr one would be prefered choice but I don't think the wife would let me stretch it that far, but you never know, she might treat me.

my cars never really get up to optimum temp, as work is 8 mins away but the same for any car if a turbod car would need to wait to have fun.

the one near me has done 60k looks the dogs

From looking on a thread on here why is it worsr if slap is only on 1 piston?

BUT
from what I can gather then treat the engine sympathetically when cold regular good oil changes and engine life expectancy should be good for a lot of years (would probably keep a hold of it for 4-5 years like to get my moneys worth

sorry for dumb ass questions but research is always a good thing

Piston slap on just one cylinder would lead one to believe there is a problem with that cylinder.

If you can get an 04 VXR, slightly cheaper than a 6.0 and the best car of the lot

Happy hunting and good luck
