- that they were shipped to Oz against their will, and want compensation...

Had they not been shipped to Oz for free, they'd now be living in this grey over-priced land of foreigners and speed cameras, and quite probably wishing they could emigrate to sunny Oz.

So, perhaps they can have 'compensation' but only if they move back here?

yes ...as compensation, they are all welcome to come back to their Motherland. See how many take up the option.

are these the same australians that were shipped to OZ from the UK, to find a 'better life' only to find themselves cheap farm labour at best, and sexually/physically abused at worst?

If not, carry on, i apologise.....

If so....FFS grow up!!!

And how were children's homes in the UK during the same era?

Yea they're not afraid of playing the blame game over here especially if there's a compo claim. Ridiculous. (Though in this case I'm not sure who wants what because I've not read anything about it)

... what a delightful idea this was. Send your nation's kids away somewhere else completely different and forget about them. Quality childcare policy.

have you read PH? I reckon many folks would be more than happy to do this.

The apology is for the many 10 year olds removed from England without their parents consent (because of their deprived backgrounds) shipped to Australia, fostered out or made to live in orphanage homes and made to work hard, not the better life they were promised. Most of these kids never saw their parents again.

Just watched an interview with a man who never found his Mum again and is obviously still not over what happened to him.

PH is a cruel place at times. Many on here advocate corporal punishment, sterilisation and other inhumanities as cures against societies ills. Deportation is another of their favourite solutions.

Well, here we can see the end result of the latter policy. These people deserve an apology of some sort - at the very least. They were deported having done absolutely nothing wrong, apart from being born in the wrong circumstances. This policy only stopped in 1969 - so some of these people are still relatively young.

And technically, they aren't really Australians.

read Eric Mc's post to understand what I was saying. I didn't mean ship off kids, rather that PH has somewhat right wing ideas at times, and I'm sure some of the more 'extreme' of the grumpies would advocate this sort of thing.

Sorry, a somewhat flippant comment by me. The fact that these kids were shipped off to the other side of the world, told that they were orphans, then subjected to all kinds of abuse is abhorrent. I really can't understand the logic behind it.

Well the past few hundred years seems to have worked.

It seems that by shipping people there against their will creates a society with good values and low crime.

Those who sent them there have ended up with no values and high crime comparatively. These people may not have had the great life, who is to say their life over here would be better.

Maybe the price they have paid was worth it by creating the country as it is now.

It's ironic. Originally, we sent convicts there as a punishment. Then we sent kids there as a lesson. Now we spunk eleventy billion quid to Quantas to get us there for a holiday destination.

Who knew?

And the thousands like him - anyone who thinks doing this to a small child is OK and won't alter their entire life needs to grow up.

And a forthright apology and acknowledgement of the wrong and the damage it has caused, however late it may be is certainly a step in the right direction - it displays more emotional credibility than our reprehensible politicians.

So you think it is right to apologise for something you had no connection too?

This is just being nice to the media, there is no need to.

Where does this stop?
