Photo Software
Discussion
Hi
I currently rely on i-photo for managing and processing my photos. I am thinking of upgrading to Aperture2 to enable better storage and manipulation of photo's.
I currently use a Canon 450D coupled to my macbook.
Does anyone have any experience of Aperture2 and will to share comments etc.

You might also want to look at Adobe Lightroom as well
which is free of charge until 30th April 2010 - check out the beta 3 version on www.Adobe.comOut of the box, Aperture has limited but sufficient (when compared to Photoshop) options in terms of image manipulation, but you can get various plug-ins to be able to edit images more creatively.
I find its storage set up is pretty straightforward - easy to find and organise images and things like the light table are handy for comparing images.
One thing I would say is that you'll need to also invest in a decent manual to get the most out of it. I have this one and it's proven to be very helpful:

which is very nice, but is not fully functional - just a tip. I would just give a little reservation that it doesn't always do what you want it to as I am finding. Not a criticism, since I am happy using v2.5 of LR and recognise that I am playing with the beta!I downloaded quite a few trial versions of different software and decided to use Lightroom. I find it fantastic if a little fiddly. For example, the scrolling bar is about half the width of the normal windows one and its easy to 'slip off' which is a bit irritating! Also took me a while to get it to run without freezing on my desktop although the laptops were fine. Narrowed it down to a processor hungry graphics driver that I'd picked up somewhere. Once deleted from windows startup its been fine.
I particularly like LR's file and folder management. The editor clearly isn't as good as PS but in over 12 mths I've resorted to PS twice. Both times to colour pop a B&W picture. Otherwise I use Portrait Professional Studio as a plug-in or external editor.
