Before someone says "Go and stand 8' away from one" it's not the same, just the same as TVs look smaller surrounded by other TVs in a huge department store than they do when you get it home and find it occupies half the room.

I'm thinking either 37" or 42" Plasma if I do choose to change TV, and there's a point where bigger simply isn't better especially on SD material.

I may just run the CRT into the ground but sometimes the yearning for new toys means you have to at least investigate these things.

I have a 32inch in my office that is viewed from about 6' away so, 42inch from 8' away should be OK.

I have a 42"er, I to had the same dilemma as you regarding my size and whether I could cope with looking at it. It did take a while to get used to having such a big one but, after a few days, I was fine.

BTW I sit around 9' away.

No. It's fine. I probably sit 8' or 9' away from a 50" one. SD is fine at that, and 1080p stuff is brilliant, better than being at the cinema.

I'm 7' away from a 42" and it's absolutely perfect.

Absolutely fine.

My 50" is about 10 feet from the couch and, although I was worried it was going to be too big when I bought it, it's perfectly adequate. In fact, I reckon the room could easily cope with a larger screen.

I play my xbox on it, sitting about 6 or 8 feet away and it's not a problem.

Where do you sit in the cinema? If it's near the front you'll be fine. Personally I feel ill if I sit too near the front in the cinema, and when I bought my 37" telly, which sits 9' from the sofa, to begin with I thought I'd made a mistake. I've got used to it now though and reckon I could have got away with a 42" biggrin
