After a long argument with my friends about the highly debated subject of scones, we couldn't come to a conclusion. So i decided to put it to the PH masses.

Which goes first, the jam or the cream?

Jam to provide a firm base upon which to smear the cream.

Jam, try spreading it on cream and then try the flat harder base of a scone

Never mix cream with the jam. It's dirty & unhygienic. smile

Then ditch them.
Seriously.
I stopped speaking to several friends about 9 years ago cos they were arguing that you put salt on chips first then the vinegar!! Oh what, and wash off all the salt?
Fools.

I think the problem here is you are asking the question as if there was a right or wrong answer. There isn't, its just personal preference.

Minister, I will ask you for the tenth time, which goes first, the jam or the cream? a simple 'YES' or 'NO' answer.

Then why is it that in the chippy, you are always asked if you want salt & vinegar? never vinegar & salt?

He has owned a Bentley, clearly not one of the great unwashed.

Also as a right wing bigot of the first water I'm also a great believer in salt then vinegar. Your argument holds no water. If you put salt on second, on wet chips, it will clump so some chips far too much others not enough.

At least that's what my valet tells me.

Cream then jam on the Scone issue, by the way.

A thornier question: which does 'scone' rhyme with? Stone, or gone?

Gone, i'll have no truck with that strange southern pronunciation. [One of my Grandads was a baker and what he said is good enough evidence for me as to how it should be said.]
