A6 2.5 TDI Quattro sport - tuning options...
Discussion
Hi!
OK so I'm bad!! I didn't search to hard on this subject before making my post but I have this question:
A6 2.5 TDI Quattro sport, I got this car on the rebound after crashing a fairly highly tuned Skyline and narrowly escaping with my life. Enough of that but I can't get away from the idea of tuning my A6 just a little and maybe taking it on the track. It really is a superb base to start from I think.
So far all my options seem to be a remap or a chip.
Which is boring. There's got to be more to diesel tuning than just some programming???
Being an exSkyline nutter I'm thinking boost controller, bigger FMIC fuelling & induction... can anyone point me to some serious diesel tuning outifts/members or threads?
Cheers!!

I tried to find some older posts on this engine but sod all is coming up.
I owned a B6 A4 2.5 tdi quattro sport with the AKE 180bhp engine. It was fairly good all round in standard trim. then tried a simple remap, after a bit of research it revealled that the fuel injection pump is pretty maxed out already and 210bhp seems to be the workable limit. And sure enough with the remap it was lumpy as hell. I had it reverted back to standard trim and it ran spot on again. There was a chap in poland offering aftermarket ECU upgrades for the injection pump but at £1200 per pump it was a risk I want willing to take. They are prone to oil leaks although mine never had any whatsoever.
These were pretty much max'ed out on the available technology at the time when they left the factory. You can i believe decat modern tdi without effecting the MOT.
I researched lots, have been an Audi chap for a good few years (this was my 4th quattro, but first TDi) as it is its not a bad car, but i wounldnt touch it tuning wise on hindsight.
If the engines go wrong they tend to do it in style, i know a fair few with bills into multiple £1000's that was enough to make me move it on. Its not a bad engine, its just not Audis best offering on the TDi front. the 1.9 p130 engine is much more tunable. The newer 3.0tdi totally outshines it in every respect, the 180 engine was end of the line technology the 2.7/3.0 v6's are a big step onwards from that and without a lot of effort you can see good gains.

the early 3.0tdi was 204bhp, a generic remap will see circa 250bhp and 500nm.
But with all chip/remapping its not so much the power but how its delivered that makes the car more drivable. Personally if i was doing it again a live remap would be the preferred route.
Look back through previous threads there are specific VAG tuners for this who carry recommendations well.

In my opinion, the brakes and suspension would be hopeless on a track. The A6 is a heavy car and that combined with four wheel drive, diesel engine, nose heavy balance and sheer size will make it very safe on a track, but no fun compared to so many other cars on the road.

Thanks for your thoughts istoo. In the past few weeks my research has led me to much the same conclusion re tunability. Still I'm quite impressed with the engine but probably won't go any further with it.My main thrust now will be to firm up the suspension a bit with some eibach springs and consider a gearbox remap.
My project to add paddle shifters to it may bear some fruit!
Haven't seen a lot on tuning of the 2.5TDI .... but the 1.9TDI has a lot more potential than I ever expected, having seen someone on these forums that has obviously spent way too much money somehow screwing 270bhp out of one.
Mine is only the vanilla 1.9TDI Avant. Its handling is generally fairly "safe", but it can be surprisingly chuckable.

from my experience polybush the wishbones makes a big difference to the turn in. Audis have all got fairly poor brakes in standard form. Good pads and oil will make a difference, failing that i would look at S/RS4 brakes. Personally i thought the B6 quattro sport setup was good off the shelf. Not as harsh as the current Sline but good ride/ handling compromise.
You will know but generally speaking the understeer when pushed, but if you keep pushing it goes, under then over as the torsen diff moves the power about. Can be fun but you have to flick it about
All good fun! If you feel super adventerous how about looking for a current generation S4 diff with the 60-40 split, should help balance out the weight/ power delivery.
I would look into the decat option as well as i was told by a reliable source that new TDis don't require them for MOT purposes. All my previous Audi Vees has two cats. Help the turbo spool up a bit better.
As far as the remap goes, I was advised by one good tuner to consider a Tuning box, as you can wind them back to get a mild increase without pushing it too much. If i was doing it all again i would consider that route or the live remap. But as with all these things make sure the engine is in 100% good health first.
Its not a bad car, just not Audis best TDi, as the others are genuinely good engines. Indeed I know a few 1.9tdis well over 200 bhp, one of which is on 240k! The 3.0 tdi is a cracker, and the 4.2tdi is just scary.

If your determined to take it on track, suspension and brakes are the big factors you need to improve.
As mentioned, there isnt much out there for tuning the 2.5tdi.
You dont need cats on a diesel, they only need to pass a smoke test... I ran mine (1.9tdi ~240bhp) from new with a straight through exhaust.

OK I wasn't thinking of taking it on the track competitvely! lol just for a laugh to see what it can do.
Anyhow I fixed the brakes with DS2500 pads and a swap out to 5.1 fluid using a gunson pressure bleeder - what a difference that made.
I think the bushes are OK but you know now you mention it...
Where could I get the decat from ?
