Boiler Lockout Problem
Discussion
Recently my combi boiler (which I'm guessing is at least 5 years old) has started making some rather strange noises and locking out. I have checked the water pressure gauge and the black analogue hand points to a black marker half way around the dial, which I assume is where it should be.
Every now and again the boiler will not come on when it should, I'll check it and the 'Lockout' light will be on. Pressing 'Reset' will rectify the problem and the 'Flame' light will come on. However, after doing this, when hot water is needed, or if the central heating comes on, the boiler will sometimes make strange banging, hissing and juddering noises.
Do any plumbers, or more experienced DIYers have any idea what may be causing this and what I can do to rectify it?

Hi Ferg, thanks for the quick reply. The boiler is a Potterton Puma 100e.
I did just google the model and it would appear that I'm not the only person with this same problem, however, most of the replies on other forums haven't been that helpful!

And people wonder why PH has a section for everything!Having read more carefully...
Is it always hot when it does it? If not then I'd suspect the FFD. If it has a lockout at all I'm assuming it's flame rectification which senses the flame. So...
Electrodes, leads, PCB, any of these. Do you have the manual? Faultfinding flow chart?
The noise sounds more like a diverter valve fault, which is probably unconnected.

What these boilers need is a diagnostic internet connection so that Ferg can fix them online!
That really would be handy! Thanks for the further help Ferg. I'm not sure about the temp when the noise happens, but I have heard what sounds like steam exiting a couple of times. This may just be a noise, but I'll check it out more closely next time. So far I've been inclined to stand back and keep the cupboard door closed in case the bloody thing explodes!

It does kind ofmake you wonder why we ask anything....but that really really made me laugh. It's that kind of "good grief" feeling when you see a response like that.I did just google the model and it would appear that I'm not the only person with this same problem, however, most of the replies on other forums haven't been that helpful!
