These idiots pay them off. Then, to look even stupider, they tell the world that their warship was "standing by watching the proceedings of the payoff". Sinking their a$$ following the proceedings would be a better dis-incentive to pirating I should think. Hostages safe, pirates dead....job done. Amazing idiots that will ensure further pirating.

Submarines are better to sink the pirates, they don't see it coming.

And to "see the released ships safely home". Lord have mercy. hehe Why not pay up, get the hostages safely released, then sink them? No honor or keeping of one's word required here, this is a zero sum game.

Didn't the whole piracy thing start up because Spaniards (and others) were rocking up with their trawlers, fishing the seas dry and removing the local fishermens previous source of income?

No. I believe it is because warlord types can hijack a large commercial vessel, demand millions of dollars....and get it. To put this down to stealing fish is a bit too kind IMO. smile

Well, there is a general code of conduct to not shoot people when they are running away, but (apart from the legalities of international waters, and who has command over them) i can't see any reason why they can't just give them 5 minutes headstart, then hail them and tell them they are being arrested for piracy and send a few shots over the bow and then allow them to start a war on a cruiser if they like.

Alternatively, you could just hand the locations of Spanish ships to pirates and tell them their government rolls over like a dog, so go and bother them instead.

I suppose that is one course of action. smile

Obviously it's a big business now, and you're never going to keep mafia/warlords out of anything profitable, but I'd always thought its origins were fishing-based. I know it's a Wiki, but I've been hearing this for years:

wiki said:
During the Siad Barre regime, Somalia received aid from Denmark, Great Britain, Iraq, Japan, Sweden, USSR, and West Germany to develop its fishing industry. Cooperatives had fixed prices for their catch, which was often exported due to the low demand for seafood in Somalia. Aid money improved the ships and supported the construction of maintenance facilities.[16] After the fall of the Barre regime, the income from fishing decreased due to the Somali Civil War.

Also, there was no coast guard to protect against fishing trawlers from other countries illegally fishing and big companies dumping waste which killed fish in Somali waters. This led to the erosion of the fish stock. Local fishermen started to band together to protect their resources. Soon some of them discovered that piracy was an easier way to make money.[citation needed] Due to the clan-based organization of Somali society, the lack of a central government, and the country's strategic location at the Horn of Africa, conditions were ripe for the growth of piracy in the early 1990s.

Profile

Most pirates are aged 20–35 years old and come from the region of Puntland, a region in northeastern Somalia. The East African Seafarers' Association estimates that there are at least five pirate gangs and a total of 1,000 armed men.[45] According to a BBC report, the pirates can be divided into three main categories:

* Local Somali fishermen, considered the brains of the pirates' operations due to their skill and knowledge of the sea. Most think that foreign boats have no rights to cruise next to the shore and destroy their boats.
* Ex-militiamen who used to fight for the local clan warlords, used as the muscle.
* Technical experts who operate equipment such as GPS devices.[20]
Pretty unnoficial laymen speak, I know.

Probably designed to scare the pirates away with a show of force rather than engage them. That's all it is though , a show!

WTF are Somalian pirates going to do with 3 million in (presumably) cash anyway?

This is unbelievable. I would like to think there is more to it that we know (poisoned cash, cash with radio transmitters, fake cash, cash that is really explosives) but I bet there isn't.

Should have handed the money over, got the hostages back, and then machine-gunned the pirates.

The trouble is, if you do that (shoot them after the handover) you set a precedent, that they won't forget. They still have a lot of ships (over 100 IIRC) and hostages there, if you start killing them when they come to do the exchange they'll soon just start sinking the ships and killing the hostages as soon as things start going wrong or getting delayed.

If you don't shoot them you sent a precedent that they face no threat from the navy and are free to hijack more ships and take additional hostages.

Ah, congrats on being the first to bite that stale and stereotypical bait. The story was done and reported by the Asscociated Press, various networks simply carried it. You can do better....maybe. wink
