Hello all,
I'm posting for my old man, as he is scared of computers. Or at least thats the excuse he's using for me to do all the research.

He's bought a 2005 VXR Monaro, but I'm a bit confused by it. Its a 5.7 LS1, but I thought 2005 VXR's were LS2's? But his has the single back box, so that would make it a 2004??! Its an 05 registration though, so maybe its just late?
What are the differences between the 04 and 05 VXR's?
I've been googling for a bit, but an indepth wiki article on the UK spec stuff is hard to find.

Sorry to sound like a complete novice - in fact, why am I apologising, I AM a complete novice and its not even my car.

The ripshifter, seems to be a popular item and already I'm getting pressured to find out 'who sells them on that interweb thing'. Monkfish seem the reasonable one's at £329 (with £12 delivery), is there anyone else?

Final question, I promise.
From my quick searching, I've found that the single backbox zorsts can't have the switching exhaust thing from wortec, and so he'd be looking at a cat back job. monkfish again seem reasonable at £825 fitted (this seems to include a remap too?!) but having one made up by a reputable local firm should be ok? He's only after a steady noise increase, and has been talking about taking the standard exhaust off to see what can be done, either fitting straight pipes or knocking the baffles out!

Sorry for the all the questions, just looking to get an understanding.

Hello and welcome.

If your dads vxr only has the exhausts on one side then he has an 04 vxr. Your dads car may well have been a late registered one hence being an 05.

The engine in the 04 vxr's is an ls1 but has a bit more power than the 04 cv8's. The car also has a 3.7 diff which helps alot as the gearing in monaros is long.

You can not get an electric switching exhaust for the early 04 cars, but the monkfish wortec exhaust has removable centre boxes. To be honest its a bit of a pain in the arse to change but you can un bolt and pull the centre boxes out and replace them with straight pipes. Everything comes with the wortec exhaust.

Your best best will be to ring up monkfish tommorow to find out more.

Hope this has helped

Oh yeah regarding the centre boxes they are not hard to change its just that i find i have to drop the exhaust, to replace the centre and then refit. Takes me around 1 hour 30 minutes mostly working on my own and my brother helping to align things up.

The ripshifter is a good mod and again not hard to fit, you just need a good set of tools and small hands/forearms.

For mods you can also try rapidgb.

Wow, excellent (and quick) responses, many thanks.
I'll give monkfish a call tomorrow and see what is what. In fact, why am I doing it..

We've plenty of tools and knowhow, thank god, as he is a mechanic by trade. So its good to hear that upgrading doesn't have to be done by a computer programmer! - although a remap, looks like the done thing to do, nowadays.

is there a massive difference between 04 VXR's and the later ones? Ovbiously the 0.3 litres and exhaust...

I'm also guessing that the 'options' list on these things was pretty small? Every pistonhead advert seems to come with the same internal options?

Again, your help is appreciated.

What colour has he got? Also where abouts in the U.K are you located?

Welcome. As others have said, there are many options. I have a B&M quick shifter and Difilippo exhaust from Rapid GB. Most of the guys have Rip Shifters and Wortec from Monkfish. Tbh you'll be happy with either, call both, compare their prices then choose the one you like the sound of. Good luck.

LOL, yeah the interiors do look the same, but its more than enough.

Its Silver(thats as much as I know) with chrome wheels, will try and get a picture uploaded, but its standard, so looks the same as anyone elses. We're just in North Yorkshire, about 15 miles outside of York.

Thanks for the welcome mate.

The rapidGB website mainly states superchargers, will give them a ring, but thanks for the info.

Welcome aboard thumbup

Sounds like you've got the rarer early VXR model - nice car.

Don't think there were many options apart from mudflaps smile

As the brochure says ' No frills, just thrills'.

The 04 car has a 3.7 diff which helps as the monaros have long gearing. A remap is advised though with an exhaust upgrade

Hi and welcome. If you dad has an 04 VXR it`ll have 2 square exhausts exiting on the LHS of the car and a big boot.

These are without doubt the rarest and the best of the Monaros in std form as Holden Special Vehicles spent a lot of extra money on these cars but only 65 (I think) were ever imported into the UK.

No problem. I drove my brother's Cavalier SRI 130 in the late 80s. Seemed bloody quick compared to my Talbot Horizon!

Hi Mate,

It's very easy to get carried away and start blowing money unneccessarily. Been there done tha,t etc. My best advice before you do anything:

Come to a few forum bashes and meet us. Have a look around our cars and the different mods and get some rides too. You can discuss with the owners what they have had done, and where, and at what cost, and then most importantly, make you own mind up (Dad's I know).

Whatever, enjoy the V8, this will be the last couple of generations to be able to do that.

Welcome to the madhouse!
Gareth's comments are about right - unfortunately i Think his last comment is all too right....
So make the most of it whilst you've got it.
Your dad's is indeed the rarest Monaro, and is the 04 model. The distinguishing features are the smooth bonnet, single sided exhaust, and the filler cap half way down the wing instead of being high up. Oh yes, it has a big boot as well! Some on this forum will argue that you shouldn't mod this one as it will be the classic to own in the future. If you do mod it, make sure you keep the bits to change it back. Personally I think time will show that all the Monaros will eventually be seen as classics, but I suppose that that both VXR models will be the ones to own.

Welcome to the forum. Definitely a 2004 VXR, don't worry about the reg year, there are '05's on 57 plates!

I agree with most that this version will become a future classic and is already a collectors choice.

I thought there was only 50 of the '04 VXR's brought over and 200 of the CV8's?

As Jez said, yours' (Dad's) is original HSV, not messed about by Vauxhall.

No prob's with getting an exhaust made if that the preference, it's often cheaper than the ready made options. Getting hold of a RipShifter should be easy too.

Most of all make sure he lets you drive it too, you'll both love it!

Thanks for all the welcomes, sounds like a great community here.

I've printed all this out (bless his computer illiteracy) and we'll try get to the next meet.

Sounds like a few of you are northeast'ish. Good to hear.

He has no idea how rare his car is! Can't wait to tell him. He's got a Rare Lotus esprit too, so the boasting is not going to stop now! It might be a good idea not to mod this one (or at least just go subtle and keep the parts like you've mentioned).

So its an original HSV job? It does say so on the bonnet on the inside. It's amazing what you can find out on forums like this.
